Outside Machinist
Job Description
The Outside Machinist is responsible for conducting diesel engine repairs, rebuilds, and overhauls, as well as working on other types of engines. This role involves assisting in the teardown, repair, replacement, and installation of reduction gears. The machinist will work on large mechanical systems and heavy equipment, including staging equipment and materials, bolting up equipment, and installing machinery. Additional responsibilities include assisting in the replacement of the Stern Gate, repairing the Steering Ram, and conducting generator repairs, rebuilds, and overhauls. The machinist will also be responsible for repairing deck equipment and deck machinery.
Responsibilities
- Analyze jobs from start to finish to ensure proper and safe work methods are used.
- Read and interpret work specifications, blueprints, technical manuals, and design sketches to ensure proper dimensions and tolerance levels of finished products.
- Assemble, repair, and fabricate metal parts using mechanical equipment such as hand tools, calipers, micrometers, lathes, boring mills, planers, shapers, slotters, and milling machines.
- Assemble parts into sub-units or complete units.
- Install ship machinery including propelling machinery, auxiliary motors, pumps, ventilating equipment, and steering gears.
- Test and inspect installed machinery and equipment during dock and sea trials.
- Assist, guide, and demonstrate good marine practices.
- Identify and troubleshoot mechanical problems and report to the supervisor.
- Must have at least three years of outside machinist experience.
- Experience with diesel engines.
- Ability to carry out written or oral instructions.
- Proficiency in operating precision tools, drill presses, and grinders.
- Ability to interpret blueprints and design sketches.
- Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
- Steady and reliable work ethic.
- Experience with mechanical equipment such as drill presses, shears, valves, and marine machinery.
- Knowledge of shipyard operations.

Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Norfolk, VA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $35.00/hr.
