Your day to day as a Financial Services Supervisor

As the Financial Services Supervisor at the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board, you will play a pivotal role in safeguarding our financial integrity through meticulous audits and analysis. Your responsibilities will include overseeing the cash receipting process-ensuring accurate reconciliation, deposit preparation, and payment entry. You will ensure that funds from various sources, including State and Federal agencies, localities, and clients, are precisely documented within our accounting systems. Your timely and thorough work will be essential for maintaining accounting controls, ultimately ensuring our financial records, statements, and reports are free from material misstatements. You'll tackle complex financial transactions and conduct challenging audits, requiring a keen eye for detail and accuracy.

Additionally, you're tasked with auditing the work of team members to ensure compliance with established controls, and adherence to critical deadlines will be vital for producing agency financial statements and managing outstanding receivables effectively.

What you need to be successful

To thrive as the Financial Services Supervisor at Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board, candidates must possess a robust set of skills and knowledge. A comprehensive understanding of auditing compliance and regulations, as well as internal control procedures, is crucial. Proficiency in cash handling, banking procedures, and the ability to generate complex journal entries for various receivables transactions are essential. Outstanding skills in preparing reports on audit findings, analyzing flow charts, and creating internal control questionnaires will set candidates apart. A strong grasp of generally accepted accounting principles and bookkeeping procedures is necessary, along with excellent computer skills to navigate various software applications effectively.

To qualify for this position, candidates must have the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business Administration with one (1) year of bookkeeping or accounting experience.

or

  • Associate's degree in Accounting or Business Administration with two (2) years of experience.

or

  • Three (3) years of bookkeeping or accounting experience, ideally including auditing experience with governmental agencies.

Additionally, candidates should be knowledgeable about the behaviors related to the disabilities of clients served by the agency. Familiarity with computer-assisted accounting record systems and the ability to perform complex arithmetical computations will further enhance effectiveness in this role. Experience working with agency employees and vendors is also vital for success.
