SVM - Associate Professor in Clinical Pathology/Molecular Biology

St. George's University invites applicants for a full-time Associate Professor role, in the Department of Pathobiology in the School of Veterinary Medicine, beginning 7/1/2026.

Job Description

Objective Contribute to the School of Veterinary Medicine's research mission and enhance the knowledge, growth, and professional development of veterinary and graduate students through teaching, diagnostic service in clinical pathology, and contributions to molecular diagnostics and infectious disease research.

Essential Functions

Instructional Activities:

  • Deliver lectures and facilitate small-group teaching in clinical pathology and related disciplines within a systems-based veterinary curriculum.
  • Contribute to graduate and professional courses, including molecular diagnostics and infectious disease topics as appropriate.
  • Participate in laboratory teaching, including clinical pathology laboratories and clinical skills/OSCEs.
  • Develop course materials, including learning objectives and examination questions.
  • Assist with examination administration and grading in compliance with SVM Examination Policy

Research and Scholarly Activities:

  • Develop and/or participate in collaborative research aligned with SVM priorities, including vector-borne and zoonotic diseases, infectious disease diagnostics, and molecular epidemiology.
  • Provide research training and mentorship to veterinary and graduate students, including instruction in molecular biology techniques.
  • Contribute to scholarly publications and grant applications
  • Participate in graduate student and faculty mentoring

Diagnostic Service

  • Provide diagnostic service in clinical pathology, including hematology, clinical chemistry, and cytology, with responsibility for case interpretation and reporting.
  • Contribute to and/or oversee molecular diagnostic testing (e.g., PCR-based assays for infectious diseases), including result interpretation, assay implementation, and quality assurance.
  • Collaborate with faculty and laboratory personnel to maintain and expand diagnostic capabilities

General

  • Serve as an academic advisor to assigned students
  • Maintain regular availability for student interaction, including scheduled office hours
  • Participate in departmental, school, and university service, including faculty meetings, committees, and outreach initiatives (e.g., One Health/One Medicine programs, CaribVet)
  • Collaborate across disciplines within the Department and School of Veterinary Medicine

Qualifications

  • DVM required; DVM with MSc or PhD preferred
  • Training and/or experience in clinical pathology
  • Experience with molecular diagnostic techniques (e.g., PCR, qPCR, sequencing) in a research or diagnostic setting
  • Evidence of teaching ability or experience in veterinary and/or graduate education
  • Candidates with strong clinical pathology training and an interest in developing or expanding expertise in molecular diagnostics are encouraged to apply.

Preferred

  • ACVP or ECVP board certification or eligibility in Clinical Pathology
  • Experience in a diagnostic laboratory environment, including clinical pathology and/or molecular diagnostics
  • Experience with assay validation, quality assurance, or laboratory oversight

Hours and Travel

  • A typical work week is 40 hours Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm.
  • Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but the employee must be available during the core work hours between 8 am - 5 pm on campus for in-person classroom/laboratory, diagnostics, and research, otherwise available by email or remote means for meetings.
  • Travel for medical/personal and professional meetings is granted by request and approval of the administration
