Job Summary:
This position plays a critical role in supporting Augusta Health’s mission and advancing departmental goals through measurable performance indicators and service excellence. This position contributes to a collaborative, patient-centered environment and helps drive outcomes aligned with organizational priorities.
Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on building mechanical and electrical equipment and systems at the main hospital building as well as at satellite facilities. Installs, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs various mechanical systems. Participates in the hospital preventive maintenance (PM) program.
Essential Job Duties:
- Performs all duties of Maintenance Mechanic I and II, while operating independently on complex systems and supporting leadership functions within the Plant Operations team.
- Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs advanced and critical hospital infrastructure and equipment.
- Independently leads work on:
- High-pressure steam boilers, feed pumps, and combustion control systems
- Medical gas systems, air/vacuum systems, and utility infrastructure
- Advanced BAS/fire alarm system diagnostics and response
- Complex patient care systems and building infrastructure
- Performs detailed boiler system operations and maintenance:
- Maintains logs, performs chemical analysis and treatment, and supports control and softener repair
- Troubleshoots and repairs complex utility systems:
- Water pumps
- Plant and medical air compressors
- Air dryers
- Hot water and steam heating systems
- Boiler combustion controls
- Diagnoses and repairs facility vehicles, snowblowers, lift gates, and powered equipment
- Aligns and repairs motors, pumps, and control components
- Assists the Maintenance Supervisor with:
- Coordinating contractor and vendor work
- Reviewing scopes of work and overseeing quality
- Managing parts and supplies inventory
- Placing and expediting orders
- Provides technical leadership and support to junior mechanics and trades staff
- Maintains a safe and clean work environment and reinforces compliance with safety regulations
- Ensures timely, high-quality repairs that prioritize patient experience and operational reliability
- Participates in after-hours on-call coverage and responds promptly to system failures
- Operates hospital vehicles for inter-campus travel and off-site service needs
- Supports snow removal efforts during the winter season
- Performs other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
- Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must have completed formal Mechanic Apprentice Program (Valley VoTech or equivalent)
- Licensure/Certification: None
- Experience: Minimum of five (5) years Hospital campus work experience with demonstrated advanced troubleshooting and repair experience with air compressors, boilers, valves, pumps and motors as well as expertise on hospital medical air, medical vacuum and waste anesthesia gas systems and hospital beds and stretchers.
- Driver's License: Yes
- To drive an Augusta Health Vehicle, must also be 21 years old and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must be approved by Risk Management.
- Eligibility to work in the United States and meet Virginia state employment requirements
Preferred Qualifications:
- Education: None
- Licensure/Certification: Possession of at least one certification or be a licensed Gas Fitter as issued by DPOR or a current ASSE 6040 Certification to perform Medical Gas System Maintenance and Testing as certified by the American Society of Safety Engineers.
- Experience: None
- Prior experience in a hospital, healthcare system, or related service-oriented environment
- Familiarity with Augusta Health’s systems, workflows, or organizational culture is a plus
Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Must be able to read blueprints and other technical documentation.
- Ability to perform advanced troubleshooting & repairs on a wide variety of facility utility and building infrastructure systems including air compressors, boilers and door hardware.
- Basic computer keyboard skills necessary for sending and receiving e-mails and entering work status updates for assigned work orders.
- Must be able to climb ladders.
- Demonstrated expertise with diagnostics and repair of complex hospital equipment and systems such as patient beds and stretchers, the pneumatic tube system and medical gas systems.
- Functions effectively as a contributing member of the Plant Operations Department work team.
- Maintains responsibility for individual tasks and assignments but is not accountable for overseeing or directing the work of the team.
- Must demonstrate good troubleshooting skills.
