Our client, an established and well known non-profit organization in the Arlington, Virginia area is seeking an experienced Director of Accounting to lead core accounting operations and oversee financial reporting activities within a complex organizational environment. This position will be responsible for accurate financial reporting, maintaining compliance with applicable accounting standards and regulatory requirements, and leading a small team of accounting professionals covering accounting operations and accounts payable. The ideal candidate will bring a strong technical accounting background, sound leadership skills, and the ability to operate effectively in a collaborative, evolving setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide leadership for day-to-day accounting operations, including oversight of the general ledger and accounts payable
- Direct monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting
- Prepare financial statements, cash flow reporting, debt ratio analysis, and other financial reporting for leadership
- Maintain compliance with GAAP and other applicable regulatory and institutional requirements
- Develop, enhance, and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Oversee lease billing activity and debt-related payment processes for short- and long-term obligations
- Manage accounts payable operations, including payment approvals and budgetary review support
- Ensure bank accounts are reconciled accurately and on schedule
- Coordinate tax filings, capital asset reporting, and debt-related schedules
- Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff while fostering accountability and continuous improvement
- Partner with leadership on process enhancements and other finance-related initiatives
Your base pay will depend on your skills, experience and training, knowledge, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.

- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
- 7 or more years of progressive accounting or financial management experience
- Prior experience with a public accounting firm (audit) and a CPA are preferred
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls
- Advanced Excel skills required
- Experience with enterprise financial systems; Workday experience preferred
- Proven ability to lead teams, manage competing priorities, and communicate effectively across functions
- Prior experience in a larger or complex environment preferred
