Water Resources Engineer (Stormwater and Drainage)
We are seeking a mid-level Water Resources Engineer with experience in stormwater management, drainage design, and hydrologic/hydraulic modeling to support transportation and municipal infrastructure projects in Virginia. This role offers the opportunity to work on technically challenging projects while growing toward project leadership and mentoring responsibilities within a collaborative, multi-disciplinary engineering team.
You will contribute to a wide range of roadway and site infrastructure projects, supporting design from concept through construction, while coordinating with internal teams, agencies, and contractors.
What You’ll Do
- Design stormwater management systems, roadway drainage, and erosion & sediment control in accordance with state and local regulations.
- Perform hydrologic and hydraulic modeling for watersheds, culverts, channels, and storm sewer systems.
- Analyze survey data, maps, and topographic information to support engineering design.
- Prepare and contribute to plans, reports, specifications, scopes of work, and cost estimates.
- Coordinate with contractors, consultants, and government agencies.
- Support construction phase services, including responding to RFIs and field issues.
- Work collaboratively with engineers across transportation, civil, and environmental disciplines.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering (ABET-accredited), with emphasis in Water Resources
- 4–10 years of experience in water resources or civil infrastructure design
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in Virginia or ability to obtain within 6 months
- Experience with: Stormwater and drainage system design, Erosion and sediment control design, Hydrologic modeling using TR-55, TR-20, Rational Method, Hydraulic modeling using HEC-RAS, HY-8, HydroCAD, or similar software.
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and deadlines
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Experience working with local and state agency clients in Virginia
Preferred Qualifications
- Virginia DEQ Stormwater Management Administrator certification or ability to obtain licensure within 6 months of hire
- Familiarity with VDOT and Locally Administered Project (LAP) requirements
- Experience with GIS applications
- Proficiency in MicroStation OpenRoads Designer and PCSWMM
