Plans Examiner (Danville)

Performs complex commercial and residential plan reviews for structural and non-structural integrity, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing prior to the issuance of permits. Performs periodic field inspections with Inspectors for compliance. Interprets and applies applicable codes and regulations in the evaluation of proposals for new materials and reviews plan applications. Coordinates with all other City reviewers.

- Performs a broad range of plan reviews for commercial and residential structures; Reviews plans for general conformance with the VUSBC, federal and state laws, and local ordinances.
- Makes interpretations of the building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical code requirements; prepares plan review letters outlining code deficiencies identified through plan review.
- Performs field inspections alongside Inspectors for structural compliance.
- Provides a high level of customer service for customers, contractors, and developers regarding plans reviews.
- Collaborates with building and permitting staff to review plans for residents and developers of the City of Danville.
- May perform review of engineering analysis of structural design.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
- Attends meetings and participates in training.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above Certifications/Licenses
High School Diploma or GED supplemented by six months to one year of post-secondary study or training: e.g. vocational, business, technical school and three years experience in plans examining, permitting, building construction, or building inspection. Bachelors degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture or related field preferred.
- Valid Drivers License with acceptable driving record according to City Criteria
- ICC or similar certification as a plans examiner.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE
Typically requires use of standard office equipment and telephone, and related software and hardware; and any other tools and equipment as appropriate or as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This work is performed in an office environment and on jobsites, where there may be respiratory and physical hazards weekly; noise and vibration, wetness/humidity monthly; and seasonal exposure to extreme temperatures. There are occasional mechanical and fire hazards, physical danger or abuse. There is rare exposure to chemical and electrical hazards.
The employee is expected to use appropriate protective equipment for the assigned task (hard hat, safety vest, steel-toe shoes, etc.), and any other equipment as apparent or assigned, if any.
