Position Title: Design Technician

Location: Sterling, VA
Position Status: 6-Month Contract-to-Hire
Pay Rate: $24–$26 per hour (based on experience)

Position Overview

We’re looking for a motivated Design Technician to join our engineering team in Sterling, VA. This entry-level opportunity is ideal for someone with strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, and a desire to grow in the utility or power distribution field. You’ll work closely with experienced engineers and designers to develop safe, reliable, and cost-effective electrical infrastructure for residential, commercial, and industrial projects.

This role offers hands-on training, mentorship, and exposure to industry-standard design tools and field operations — a great steppingstone for anyone pursuing a career in electrical or civil design, GIS/CAD, or utility engineering.

Key Responsibilities

• Support engineering staff in designing and preparing job packages, including drawings, material lists, and labor estimates.
• Apply company, client, and regulatory standards to ensure safe and compliant designs.
• Participate in field visits to verify site conditions and interact with construction crews.
• Utilize design software and work management tools to develop and track project deliverables.
• Learn to evaluate electrical loads and recommend appropriate transformers, fusing, and protection.
• Maintain organized project documentation and provide regular progress updates.
• Collaborate with mentors, engineers, and other departments to meet project milestones.
• Uphold all safety procedures and company policies at all times.
• Perform additional duties and training as assigned to support career development.

Qualifications

Education

• Required: High school diploma or GED
• Preferred: Associate’s degree or higher in a related technical discipline (Engineering, Drafting, GIS, Electrical Technology)
• Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in science, math, or business-related field

Experience

• 0–1 year of experience in power distribution, GIS/CAD, or utility design/construction
• Exposure to drafting, field verification, or electrical design tools a plus

Skills & Abilities

• Strong communication and problem-solving skills
• Basic understanding of algebra, geometry, and spreadsheet calculations
• Ability to read and interpret technical documentation and maps
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with AutoCAD, GIS, or similar software preferred
• Excellent organization, time management, and multitasking skills
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
• Willingness to participate in storm response or after-hours work when required

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

• Primarily office-based with occasional outdoor field visits
• May involve exposure to varying weather conditions and moderate noise levels
• Ability to sit, stand, walk, and occasionally lift up to 25 lbs
• Regular use of computers, phones, and design software
