PCU Registered Nurse Job Details

• Assignment Type: Locum tenens (travel nursing contract)
• Location: Roanoke, VA 24014 – Virginia healthcare jobs
• Unit: 8 PCU CSTower (Cardiothoracic/vascular post-op focus)
• Duration: 13 weeks (October 6, 2025 – January 5, 2026)
• Shifts: 3x12-hour day shifts per week (06:45 – 19:15)
• Hours per Week: 36
• Estimated Weekly Pay: $1800–$1840
• Patient Ratio: Typically 1:5 (goal of 1:4)
• Float: Occasional float to other PCU or Med-Surg units
• Weekend Coverage: Required (6 weekend shifts per 6-week block)
• Orientation: 32 hours

Registered Nurse Qualifications

• Active Registered Nurse (RN) license – Virginia or compact state
• Minimum 1 year of recent PCU, Progressive Care, or Stepdown RN experience, including post-cardiothoracic surgery care
• Current ACLS and BLS certifications (American Heart Association preferred)
• NIHSS certification preferred
• Experience with Epic EMR charting system required
• Proficiency in telemetry, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, rapid response, blood product administration, central and peripheral line care, and management of cardiac drips (no titration)
• Experience with post-heart surgery patients, trach care, and non-invasive airway management
• COVID-19 and Flu vaccines required (medical/religious exemptions considered)
• Ability to work at least two of the three major winter holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year)

PCU RN Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality nursing care to adult and geriatric patients recovering from cardiothoracic and vascular surgeries
• Monitor and manage telemetry, cardiac drips, chest tubes, trach patients, and various oxygen modalities (CPAP, BiPAP, nasal cannula, face masks)
• Interpret and respond to dysrhythmias, initiate rapid response as needed
• Administer blood products and manage central/peripheral lines
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams including IV, respiratory, physical therapy, and pharmacy
• Float to other PCU or Med-Surg units as required
• Document patient care using Epic electronic medical records (EMR)
• Maintain infection control and isolation precautions
• Support a positive patient and family experience in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
