Psychiatrist- Virginia Beach (Virginia Beach)
Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the requirements at their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.
Basic Requirements:
- U.S. Citizenship (non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA policy)
- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved medical school
- Current unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the U.S.
- Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to board eligibility
- Enrolled residents in ACGME/AOA accredited programs may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee basis
- Proficiency in spoken and written English
- Board Certification or eligibility by the American Board of Psychiatry (preferred)
- Physical requirements include moderate lifting, light carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, use of fingers, walking, standing, kneeling, bending, and visual and auditory capabilities
Duties
- This is an open continuous announcement until September 30, 2025, or until filled, with initial referral cut-off on March 15, 2025, and subsequent biweekly reviews
- Provide comprehensive psychiatric services including assessments, psychotherapy, medication management, crisis intervention, and treatment of various psychiatric disorders across multiple clinical settings
- Serve as a mental health team leader, participate in team meetings, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams
- Order diagnostic tests, interpret findings, and make treatment decisions
- Ensure compliance with Joint Commission, VA policies, clinical guidelines, and legal requirements
- Participate in supervision, teaching, performance improvement, and quality assurance initiatives
- Provide leadership, supervision, and consultation to staff and trainees, including psychiatry residents
- Complete all clinical documentation timely and accurately
- Plan and oversee research programs and contribute to program planning and treatment approaches
