Howmet Aerospace pioneers precision investment castings in superalloys, aluminum, and titanium for jet engines and industrial gas turbines. Our Hampton, VA IGT site needs a mechatronics-minded technician who thrives on variety, ownership, and impact.

Imagine this

Your shift kicks off with a production huddle. A conveyor is trending hot, a hydraulic press shows erratic pressure, and a robot faulted on a proximity sensor. You prioritize work, consult schematics, and move—from 480Vac diagnostics to pipework repairs to a quick motor bearing swap—restoring flow and safeguarding quality. That’s a typical win on 2nd shift (Mon–Fri, 3pm–11pm) or 3rd shift (Mon–Fri, 11pm–7am) after training on 1st (Mon–Fri, 7am–3pm). You’ll start at $41.70/hour, plus $1.00/hour off-shift premium.

How you’ll contribute

• Execute preventive maintenance on motors, pneumatics, conveyors, and production machines using diagrams, manuals, and engineering specs.
• Isolate faults through observation and precision test tools; measure voltage, current, resistance, and capacitance; service 120Vac controls and 480Vac power systems.
• Dismantle and rebuild equipment using hoists, cranes, and power/hand tools; assess part wear/finish; replace bearings and components.
• Plan and install building wiring, conduit, and electrical apparatus; connect machines to power and integrate inter-machine cabling.
• Diagnose/replace transformers, motors, lighting fixtures, relays, switches, sensors, and printed circuit boards; rewire motors as needed.
• Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic and pneumatic systems; assemble and maintain pipe networks; service gauges, valves, and pressure regulators.
• Fabricate parts using machine tools; measure with calipers, micrometers; cut and weld metal to restore function.
• Rig assets for installation and relocation; operate an industrial forklift safely; work confidently at heights up to 50 feet.
• Leverage PLC knowledge and familiarity with robotic machinery to shorten downtime.
• Manage spares and consumables; check stock levels, place/expedite orders, and verify receipts; use resources wisely.
• Document maintenance actions and trends; communicate clearly with maintenance and production leadership and equipment operators to maintain shift-to-shift continuity.
• Champion a safe, clean work environment and continuous learning via workshops, publications, and networks.

What it takes

• High school diploma or GED.
• Certification from a mechanical, electrical, or multi-craft apprenticeship.
• 5–7 years of industrial electro-mechanical experience.
• Background spanning pneumatics, hydraulics, electrical, water systems, PLCs, welding, and analytical troubleshooting.
• Mobile equipment training/certification ; ability to drive an industrial forklift.
• Strong blueprint reading fundamentals; comfortable with precision measuring instruments.
• Communication skills to write routine reports and present to groups; ability to interpret safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, and procedures.
• Math fluency in percentages, proportions, area, circumference, volume; basic algebra and geometry.
• Ability to solve practical problems where standards are limited and to interpret instructions from written, oral, diagram, or schedule sources.
• Willingness to support all shifts; overtime and weekends as needed by operations.

Pay and schedule

• Starting rate: $41.70/hour.
• Shift premium: $1.00/hour for off-shifts.
• Shifts: 2nd (M–F 3pm–11pm) or 3rd (M–F 11pm–7am).
• Training: 1st shift (M–F 7am–3pm).
