Refrigeration Technician
Job Description
The Refrigeration Technician operates, tests, troubleshoots, and repairs industrial ammonia refrigeration systems and related utilities in a food manufacturing environment. This role also supports boiler, hot water, domestic cold water, and compressed air systems, while following strict safety, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and Process Safety Management (PSM) standards. The technician works both independently and as part of a team, ensuring reliable operation of critical production and utility equipment.
Responsibilities
- Operate, test, troubleshoot, and repair the ammonia refrigeration system, its sub-systems, and all auxiliary equipment related to refrigeration operations.
- Perform planned and preventive maintenance on all ammonia refrigeration and utility systems to ensure safe and reliable performance.
- Operate and maintain spiral freezers and related refrigeration equipment in accordance with established best practices.
- Maintain the material integrity, cleanliness, and organization of refrigeration and utility rooms following established standards.
- Perform or learn to perform ammonia system pump downs to safely repair or replace ammonia refrigeration components.
- Complete all required documentation, including PSM-related modifications or changes, work orders, refrigeration system logs, and operational notes as directed by department leadership.
- Automate and digitize maintenance, refrigeration, and ammonia records to support accurate and accessible documentation.
- Conduct daily rounds and inspections of the ammonia system, recording temperatures, operating conditions, and any abnormalities.
- Perform chemical tests on boilers and condenser towers and adjust treatment as needed to maintain proper water quality and system performance.
- Adhere to all company policies, including safety procedures, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), GMPs, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and PSM regulations.
- Collaborate with team members and other departments to minimize downtime and support efficient production operations.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation to diagnose issues and complete repairs.
- Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems associated with refrigeration and utility equipment.
- Perform general maintenance tasks related to electrical and electronic systems as required within the scope of the role.
- Carry out any other duties assigned by maintenance or refrigeration leadership to support department and facility goals.
- Minimum of 2 years of ammonia refrigeration experience in an industrial refrigeration environment, preferably within a food manufacturing facility.
- Extensive knowledge of operating, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing ammonia refrigeration systems and their sub-systems.
- Experience with boiler systems, hot water systems, domestic cold water, and compressed air systems.
- Basic knowledge of general maintenance practices and electrical and electronic systems.
- Strong troubleshooting skills for mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and refrigeration equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics.
- Ability to work effectively both independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
- Ability to follow and apply safety procedures, including Lockout/Tagout, GMPs, SOPs, and PSM regulations.
- Capability to perform daily inspections, rounds, and documentation accurately and consistently.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate records and documentation.
- Ammonia Certification from GCAP or RETA.
- EPA Type II certification.
- Ability to pass a respirator fit test and any required functional testing.
- Experience in a food manufacturing or refrigerated production environment.
- Familiarity with automating and digitizing maintenance and refrigeration records.
- Comfort working with chemical testing for boilers and condenser towers.
- Strong organizational skills to maintain utility and refrigeration rooms according to best practices.

Work Environment
This role is based in a food manufacturing facility with a mix of cold, damp, and refrigerated areas, as well as hot conditions near heated equipment. You will work around industrial ammonia refrigeration systems, boilers, condenser towers, compressed air systems, and related mechanical and utility equipment. Openings are available on all shifts Monday through Friday, with typical schedules of 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m., 3:00 p.m.–11:30 p.m., and 11:00 p.m.–7:30 a.m. The environment requires consistent adherence to safety practices, GMPs, and PSM standards, along with the use of appropriate personal protective equipment suitable for cold and process areas.
