Yard Laborer

: TOPS Staffing is searching a few yard laborers for a growing client who is building a brand new facility in Petersburg, VA. As a yard laborer you will be working mainly in our clients storage yard, doing what we call pairing of large pieces of metal that our welders will eventually weld together to create a piling unit. This job is primarily working outside in our yard, there will be some work done in the shop as well but you have to be ok with working outside the majority of the time in this position. We are seeking individuals with a can do work attitude that are open to helping out around the shop as needed. This is an entry level role in our clients facility and there are opportunities to be trained for higher level roles such as forklift, crane and machine operation positions that offer more responsibility and higher pay rates. Job Details: Contract to Hire Location: Petersburg, VA Hours: Daylight shift - 7am to 3:30pm - Monday to Friday schedule; some overtime may be required in this position Pay: Starting at $17 while on the contract to hire with TOPS (90 day contract to hire). Once hired on by our client you will join the company profit sharing program and with the profit sharing factored into your hourly rate you can expect to be making between $20 to $23per hour on average + company benefits, and end of year bonus. Duties/Responsibilities:

• Pair large sheets of steel to be welded. (will train on what to look for and how to select pieces to be paired)
• This job will involve working out in our laydown yard. This is where we store metal sheets before and after processing.
• Help with material movement, function as forklift or overhead crane assistant to get steel sheets, beams or pipe moved around laydown yard.
• Good attention to detail to help with pairing.
• Must be able to measure accurately, ability to read a tape measure is critical to check thickness of steel, length and width of pieces while identifying for pairing.

Education and Experience:

• Highschool diploma or GED
• Prior experience using a tape measure in a work setting is preferred but not required, however the ability measure accurately is a requirement for this role.
• Prior laboring, forklift, overhead crane or steel processing experience would be a big plus but not a requirement as this is an entry level opportunity.

Physical requirements:

• Some light lifting, pushing, pulling to maneuver items
• Job requires working outside. Combination of working inside the shop and in our laydown yard.
• Ability to be on feet for majority of shift.
