Special Assistant: Cultural and Material History
About the Job:
Working at the National Museum of the Marine Corps (NMMC), the Cultural and Material History Special Assistant will conduct research and prepare muster rolls, draft summaries of findings, assist with the updating of catalog records for artifacts in the museum’s collection, inventory artifacts and posters in the collection, prepare inventories for new collections, prepare catalog files, and work with other curators, Museum staff, special assistants and contractors.
Location/Schedule:
Fully in-person: The job is located at the Museum Support Facility (MSF) located in Dumfries, VA with occasional work required at the NMMC, in Triangle, VA, and other locations as required. Work hours are somewhat flexible but core hours are between 9:00 am and 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday and are not to exceed 29 hours during any work week.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct primary and secondary research on Marines to include muster rolls for acquisition reports and catalog files.
- Conduct research on donations offered for the Museum collection.
- Work with the Curator to review collections and prepare inventories.
- Assist the Curator in reconciling posters in the collection, developing catalog files for poster collection, inventory management, and rehousing poster collection, maintaining image files and artist information.
- Documenting collections where minimal records exist.
- Update catalog records in the Museum’s collections database.
- Scanning images and documents to update reference materials and for donations.
- Administrative tasks to include making catalog files and general filing.
- Assist in special projects and other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Excellent research skills and working knowledge of online research tools (Ancestry.com, Newspapers.com, JSTOR, Library of Congress, etc.)
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to multi-task and manage time effectively
- Experience using Microsoft Office Suite
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team or independently
- Interest in the U.S. Marine Corps, military history, art and or American history

Environment and Physical Conditions:
The environmental factors and/or physical requirements of this position include the following: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-20 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard. The employee frequently is required to be in one position for long periods of screen use, reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear both in person and over devices. The employee interacts in close spaces and frequently with other workers, vendors, and clients. May be in situations which require conflict resolution. The position works in an office environment with artificial light and air. Occasionally are exposed to contaminants like dust.
