Electronic Technician II
- Budgets and Operational plans: Assist with development of operational plans, budgets and expenditure documentation for regional transportation management systems to include Interstate ITS, Roadway Lighting and communications. Assist in development of disaster recovery plans. implement and maintain emergency response plan.
- Communication: Communicate effectively with the public concerning operations and problems with traffic signals or tolls as assigned. Communicate and interact with the police department concerning traffic signal work and repairs. Effectively resolve issues and problems.
- Electrical: Perform hands-on electrical work or coordinate staff in the repair of assigned equipment.
- Maintenance of Traffic Signals: Maintain a large number of traffic signals through ordinary maintenance, maintenance replacement and preventive maintenance programs, with work ranging in complexity from spot replacement of loop detectors, replacement of bulbs or loop amplifiers to periodic replacement of cables and other general wiring of signal heads and control cabinets. Conduct regularly scheduled checks of major signal components through the use of a laptop computer communicating to central through a modem in the cabinet.
- Oversight: Coordinate with and support field technicians and contractors to implement work plans. Lead field staff and monitor contractors performing maintenance and operation of freeway traffic management equipment and communication networks. Maintain records and prepare reports. Oversee and verify consultant work performing operations and maintenance support. Coordinate the installation of communication lines to new and relocated signals. Monitor and maintain communications to ITS equipment in the field.
- Traffic Signals: Train subordinate technicians to perform maintenance and repairs to traffic signal equipment. Oversee field and system testing of traffic signal controllers using signal control software. Monitor signal system and oversee work crew response to alarms and failures reported by the system. Develop, implement and monitor changes in traffic signal timings for systems and isolated intersections. Respond to complaints concerning traffic signal malfunctions and troubleshoot equipment to identify and correct problems using wiring diagrams and metering equipment. Inspect newly constructed and modified signals using design and plan sheets to ensure work performed complies with VDOT standards and specifications.

- Ability to supervise staff, as well as coordinate and prioritize multiple assignments and competing priorities.
- Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools, testing and diagnostic equipment, and laptop computer to perform maintenance on traffic signals.
- Considerable knowledge of electrical and electronics systems including circuit analysis and diagnostics.
- Demonstrated ability in the areas of critical thinking, problem solving and effective decision making.
- Knowledge of a variety of traffic control devices; and of traffic signal maintenance and operations.
- Knowledge of traffic management systems, including timing plans, graphic design, computer use and databases.
- Must be willing to work unscheduled hours including holidays and weekends and emergency conditions.
- Must have basic knowledge to read and understand technical drawings, datasheets, and written work instructions.
- Skill in providing and promoting good customer service to internal and external customers.
- Skill in the use of computers and web-based applications.
- Thorough knowledge of applicable federal, state, department rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and standards related to program area.
- Working skills in equipment repair, fabrication, and operation of electronic test equipment.
- Ability to effectively communicate technical information orally and in writing; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to physically perform hands-on inspection of signals, components, use required equipment, work at heights, in confined spaces, in proximity of moving traffic and in inclement weather.
- Ability to plan, coordinate, and prioritize multiple assignments and competing priorities.
- Ability to serve in an on-call capacity and respond to emergency situations within a specified period.
- Ability to supervise and manage operations and staff by analyzing needs and problems, identifying solutions and implementing recommendations to support organization goals.
- Knowledge of a variety of traffic control devices, as well as traffic signal maintenance and operations.
- Knowledge of federal and state regulations and standards related to traffic control devices.
- Knowledge of traffic management systems, including timing plans, graphic design, computer use, and databases.
- Skill in providing and promoting good customer service to internal and external stakeholders.
- Valid driver's license.
- A combination of training, experience, or education in Electronics, or related field desired.
- Commerical Driver's License
- Experience in the electronic field to include electronic board and component level repairs; Working experience in a 24-7 hour operation facility.
- IMSA Roadway Lighting certification
- IMSA Traffic Signal Level I or II technician certification(s).
- Progressively responsible experience in signal maintenance
- Substantial electrical or signal experience.
