ACADEMIC ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY, PEDIATRIC ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia is seeking candidates for a tenure-eligible Assistant Professor position to start in September 2025 or 2026. This clinical faculty position involves providing exceptional patient care in orthopaedic hip pathology management, with a strong focus on musculoskeletal research. Qualified applicants must have demonstrated clinical expertise, the ability to conduct quality basic scientific or clinical research, an MD, and be board-eligible or board-certified. Fellowship training in pediatric orthopaedic surgery is required, with a particular interest and training in hip preservation, along with evidence of academic productivity. Salary and tenure status depend on qualifications. The position will remain open until filled.

The Pediatric Orthopaedic Division currently includes two surgeons, one non-operative orthopaedist, and one physician assistant. The Orthopaedic Adult Reconstruction Division has four surgeons, and the Orthopaedic Sports Medicine division includes two hip arthroscopy specialists. The goal of this position is to develop a hip preservation practice spanning from children to adults, managing early and middle age hip pathology, including neonatal developmental hip dysplasia, residual hip dysplasia, Perthes disease, and slipped capital femoral epiphysis. The candidate will collaborate with hip arthroscopists to build a comprehensive practice for teenagers and young adults, interfacing with the adult reconstruction division for hip replacements. Experience in surgical techniques such as open hip preservation surgery, periacetabular osteotomy, and surgical hip dislocation is preferred.

The selected candidate will join a team of orthopaedic faculty sharing emergency call coverage at a Level 1 trauma center and will participate in pediatric orthopedic call pools. They will see patients at UVA Orthopaedic Center Ivy Road, a large facility housing all adult orthopaedic subspecialties, physical therapy, outpatient operating rooms, conference spaces, and prosthetics and orthotics. Clinic space in the Battle Building, dedicated to pediatric specialties, will also be available. The candidate will perform surgeries in both inpatient and outpatient settings within the UVA Health System.

The children's care model at UVA allows for comprehensive management of hip pathology across all ages, with the Children's hospital integrated within the larger UVA facility, facilitating seamless care in operating rooms, inpatient, and outpatient services.
