Position: Shipfitter
Location: Portsmouth, VA
Duration: 12 month contract to hire
Hourly Rate: 26/hr to 31/hr
Shifts: 10 hour shits Monday - Thursday/ Friday optional
Openings: 1st class and 2nd class
Exact compensation may vary based on several factors, including skills, experience, and education.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
2-5 years of experience as a Shipfitter or welder, or completion of an accredited Apprenticeship Program or possession of a Journeyman Certificate, which can be accepted in lieu of work experience.
•Must have experience in new construction
•Proficient in setting up and operating various portable and hand tools used in the trade, including plasma cutting machines and oxy/fuel equipment.
•Advanced knowledge of shipboard plate systems (hull, deck, bulkhead), including repair and installation practices, procedures, alignments, and material requirements. Skilled in blueprint reading and interpretation, and familiar with MILSPEC requirements.
•Ability to fit structural components to meet tolerance requirements.
•Possess Tack and Fillet Weld qualifications (FCAW/SMAW).
•Must be able to obtain access to military bases and various government facilities. *Must have reliable transportation* Required Equipment: Steel toe boots Long pants Physical Demands: Involves heavy lifting, frequent stooping, bending, crawling, reaching and possible working assignments in overhead structures, confined spaces or beneath machinery either indoors or outdoors in the elements and noisy conditions. Occasional lifting to 50+ pounds.
JOB DESCRIPTION
4 - 10 hour shifts Monday- Thursday Friday is 100% optional and paid overtime •Repair, modify, install, and dismantle various shipboard hulls, bulkheads, or decks. Design and fabricate fixtures and jigs.
•Report directly to the Assistant Foreman, Supervisor, or Production Lead. •Understand and follow the PPE Policy.
•Lay out materials using drawings and blueprints before performing cutting and fitting operations.
•Maintain good housekeeping practices, such as turning off machines when not in use, properly disposing of waste, and keeping the work area clean.
•Follow all requirements of the Quality Assurance Manual when invoked by the QA Workbook, Work Package (WP),
•Work Instructions (WI), or other management guidance. Identify and notify the Supervisor of unsatisfactory conditions during production operations.
•Read and understand complex terminology, blueprints, drawings, and schematics to plan installations.
•Fabricate and install fixtures, jigs, supports, and targets to close tolerances, ensuring the finish requirements of the drawings are met.
•Determine fit-up requirements for a wide range of structural components according to applicable technical drawings, manuals, and instructions.
•Determine size and material requirements.
•Ensure control and assume responsibility for Contractor (CFM) and Government (GFM) furnished materials.
•Use layout tools such as tool scales, squares, combination squares, and trammel points.
•Understand the fitting of structural components using dogs, wedges, strong-backs, etc.
•Strictly adhere to safety and quality standards, maintain good housekeeping habits, and demonstrate a high level of critical thinking and reading skills.
•Possess basic computer skills.
•Be willing to travel and work overtime as required.
•Perform work outside of specific trade skills as required.
