Lead and supervise second-shift fleet mechanics to perform diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and repairs on trucks and equipment while ensuring DOT compliance and company safety standards. Split role between hands-on mechanical work (65%) and clerical/administrative duties (35%), including parts ordering, work order management in fleet software, quality checks, and reporting to management. Provide training, mentor junior technicians, respond to emergency breakdowns, and participate in fleet condition meetings to maintain operational readiness.
Position Summary:
We are seeking a skilled and dependable Lead Mechanic to oversee second shift operations in our fleet maintenance department. This role is critical to ensure the safe, efficient, and timely maintenance of our trucks and equipment. This candidate needs to have strong leadership abilities, hands-on mechanical expertise, and a commitment to safety and operational excellence under the Waste Connection standard. Accountability is key.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and supervise second shift mechanics and technicians. Based on workload provided by manager.
- Oversee the Preventive Maintenance Program
- Perform diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance on trucks scheduled by manager.
- Ensure all work is completed in compliance with DOT regulations and company standards.
- Train and mentor junior mechanics, promoting a culture of safety and improvement.
- Maintain and oversee the cleanliness of shop.
- Log and report any major breakdowns & status of current repairs to manager at the time of discovery to properly plan for repairs &/or prepare the second shift.
- Conduct shop talk conversations discussing safety sensitive topics and waste connections standards.
- Oversee that company policies such as LOTO & Tire policy are being followed.
- Use your knowledge of what’s going on in the shop to utilize RTA or fleet management software to oversee completion of work orders. That includes the charging of parts and proper work descriptions.
- Respond to emergency breakdowns and support field operations when necessary.
- 35/65 work split. 35% of the job is clerical in office, 65% is on the floor.
- Utilize parts ordering system to coordinate with manager/clerk on parts needing to be ordered.
- Perform Quality Checks on work done on the 1st & 2nd shifts.
- Participate in daily “Fleet Condition meetings" with manager and First shift lead.
Work Schedule:
- Second shift: 12PM – 10PM
- Alternating Saturdays and EVERY weekend following a holiday.
