Position Overview
The Volunteer Engagement Manager is responsible for leveraging volunteers to maximize the organization's capacity to deliver its mission. Primary job duties include volunteer engagement efforts including volunteer recruitment and community outreach; volunteer onboarding, training, and scheduling; volunteer retention and appreciation; event planning; and reporting volunteer impact.
This role supervises the Volunteer Engagement Coordinator.
Essential Job Functions
Volunteer Recruitment & Outreach
Maintain volunteer data and track attendance using Bloomerang and Excel.
Coordinate virtual orientation logistics and support volunteer access.
Create marketing materials and post opportunities on volunteer platforms.
Partner with the Development team to promote volunteer opportunities.
Volunteer Onboarding, Training & Placement
Manage orientation sign-ups and notify staff of new volunteer placements.
Welcome new volunteers with materials, checklists, and first-day support.
Volunteer Retention & Recognition
Communicate appreciation through notes, emails, and recognition milestones.
Support volunteer recognition events and awards (e.g., Volunteer Week, Presidential Awards).
Draft volunteer-related content for newsletters and local media.
Volunteer Management
Coordinate weekend and special project volunteer groups.
Monitor scheduling tools (e.g., Sign Up Genius) and maintain shift coverage.
Support planning and communication for large groups and special events.
Lead the Service Enterprise certification process.
Staff Supervision
Supervise and support team members through scheduling, coaching, and performance feedback.
Promote training and development in volunteer engagement best practices.
Organizational Support
Represent the organization at partner meetings and on internal committees.
Contribute to emergency response planning and cross-functional initiatives.
Train staff on volunteer engagement and fulfill other duties as assigned.
The following represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the essential functions of the job.
- Commitment to the mission of GoochlandCares.
- Bachelor's degree in human services or related degree preferred. Experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
- Certified Volunteer Administrator or other volunteer management designation/training, preferred.
- 2-5 years of people and process management experience is required.
- Experience working in a nonprofit is preferred.
- Ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours.
- Strong interpersonal communication and collaboration skills displaying a caring, tactful, diplomatic, and respectful attitude towards staff, volunteers, and clients.
- Ability to provide care under a trauma-informed-care approach and DEIB approach.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to be proactive in problem solving and researching solutions.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing situations and schedules.
- Ability to multi-task, have a strong attention to detail, and manage different priorities while understanding the big picture.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines and projects.
- Strong self-awareness and willingness to seek assistance when needed.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times and manage appropriate boundaries with clients, staff, and volunteers.
- Understand that all employees participate in engaging and training volunteers to help fulfill our mission.
- A valid Virginia driver's license is required.
Technical Skills:
- Microsoft Office experience is required, specifically Excel and PowerPoint.
- Experience working with different databases is required. Experience with Bloomerang Volunteer is a plus.
- Fluency in Spanish and English is a plus.
- Willingness to become CPR certified/Basic First Aid certified.
Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions:
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
- Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, typing, talking, and lifting.
- Occasional periods of working outside exposed to different weather conditions.
- Occasional periods of driving.
