Degree in American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting, certified ASL Interpreter credentials, and 1+ year of experience as an ASL Interpreter in educational settings. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.

A K-12 school in Portsmouth, VA is seeking a skilled Sign Language Interpreter to provide essential communication support for students during the 2025-2026 school year. This full-time contract position is scheduled for 7.5 hours per day, 37.5 hours per week, from August 11, 2025, to June 1, 2026. The exact campus assignments and grade levels will be determined later, but the caseload is expected to include older high school students transitioning in their communication needs.

Responsibilities include:

• Providing sign language interpretation in both 1:1 and classroom settings to facilitate effective communication for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students
• Supporting students' access to curriculum and participation in school activities
• Performing light paraeducator duties as needed to assist with student learning and safety
• Collaborating with educators, administrators, and support staff to meet students individualized communication requirements

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented with formal training in sign language interpretation and significant practical experience in the field
• Must possess or be eligible to obtain Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level III certification, or an equivalent credential recognized by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing, by the time of hire
• Candidates with VQAS Level II certification must secure Level III status within two years from the hire date, per state regulations
