As a Part-Time Crisis Counselor at Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board, you will play a pivotal role in supporting individuals facing serious mental illnesses, substance use disorders, or emotional impairments. Your responsibilities will include conducting needs assessments, providing independent living skills training, and performing crisis intervention, all aimed at facilitating community placement and recovery. You will leverage your solid understanding of supportive counseling techniques and group dynamics to enhance clients' rehabilitation experiences.

Monitoring and documenting individual progress will be essential, ensuring adherence to legal guidelines such as HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2. To excel as a Part-Time Crisis Counselor at Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board, a specialized skill set and background are essential. A Bachelor's Degree in Human Services, such as Social Work, Psychology, or Counseling, is a foundational requirement, coupled with at least one year of experience providing behavioral health services to adults with serious mental illnesses or emotional impairments. You must be registered with the Board of Counseling as a Qualified Mental Health Professional-A (QMHP-A) or commit to registering as a QMHP-Trainee within your first month of employment. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong communication skills to effectively convey information and prepare documentation, alongside the ability to establish rapport with individuals in crisis. Proficiency in relevant software and tools will support your documentation efforts and enhance the overall therapeutic experience, ensuring you can deliver empathetic and effective support in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Knowledge and skills required for the position are:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Services (Social Work, Psychology, or Counseling)
  • (1) year experience providing behavioral health services to adults living with a serious mental illness or emotionally impaired.
  • Must be registered with the Board of Counseling to practice as a QMHP-A or must register as a QMHP-Trainee within the first 30 days of employment.
  • Valid Driver's License
