This role is ideal for a smart, sharp, and driven engineer with a strong grasp of concept-level design, schematics, and construction drawings. The ideal candidate will be proficient in AutoCAD and Revit, with experience in civil design for mission-critical environments. As a subject matter expert, you will influence the design of prototypical Data Center sites, provide technical design guidance and vendor oversight, solve large-scale implementation issues, and build a strong understanding of site design and program requirements. The successful candidate will develop and implement design strategies to expand the firm’s expertise, footprint, and profitability in Critical Facilities and Digital Infrastructure. The client is seeking a Critical Facilities Development Specialist with expertise in Civil Engineering and design for data center and infrastructure development efforts, including property diligence, site and facility design, and utility interconnection.

Responsibilities

• Develop preliminary site layout concepts using Civil 3D, including grading, utilities, and circulation patterns while keeping design flexibility for evolution
• Utilize AutoCAD and Revit to produce high-quality designs and documentation
• Communicate design standards effectively to internal and external project partners
• Maintain strategic relationships with in-region stakeholders
• Create and communicate conceptual designs from meetings and maintain project documentation pre-sale, prior to construction, during, and after construction
• Develop and maintain design standards, design prototypes, and template specifications related to site design for Data Centers and supporting infrastructure
• Create, review, and release design RFPs for various data center projects
• Travel for site assessments when needed, participate in internal design meetings, conduct construction reviews, and interface with authorities having jurisdiction
• Forecast and manage project-specific cost and schedule variables
• Manage multiple fast-paced projects simultaneously
• Lead initiatives aimed at improving cost, quality, schedule, and consistency
• Prepare proposals, presentations, and briefings
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure designs align with industry best practices
• Manage diligence efforts, optimize utility and network interconnections, and work with design and construction teams
• Manage external civil design consultants through the Data Center design and construction process
• Review designs for site layout, grading, power substations, storm water, utilities, and pavement
• Coordinate with internal and external architectural, structural, and MEP design engineers

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering (required)
• Professional Engineer licensure or on track (current FE or EIT a plus)
• 5+ years’ experience in civil design for Data Centers or Mission Critical facilities with knowledge of land use and development practices
• Experience at an Engineering Consulting firm is a must
• Experience with hyperscale / colo / enterprise data center design / mission critical facilities design projects is required
• Site selection and/or existing asset acquisition experience is a plus
• Ability to evaluate design and constructability of site design by third-party consultants
• Experience with concept-level design, reviewing drawings, and schematics
• Experience performing field observations during construction
• Strong understanding of building codes, permitting, variances, local regulations, and standards
• Knowledge of mission critical equipment and systems, design process, pre-construction requirements and construction process
• Proficient in AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bluebeam, Revit, BIM and MS Office
• Ability to communicate complex project details and market information to all organizational levels
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects with internal staff, external consultants, vendors, and stakeholders
• Detail-oriented, highly organized, and able to manage multiple tasks efficiently
• Self-starter, self-motivated, strong problem-solving skills; able to work independently and in a team
• Active participant in local data center organizations (7x24, AFCOM, DCD, Uptime Institute, DICE Bisnow, etc.)
• Military/veteran experience in electrical/mechanical roles is a plus
