Orthotist-Prosthetist (Adv Practice)

Summary

The duties of the certified Orthotist-Prosthetist at the Hampton VA Medical Center are to administer - train - and perform work concerned with providing clinical and laboratory prosthetic and orthotic services to disabled Veteran beneficiaries.

Duties

• Major Duties: Understand the complex and unique activities and characteristics of Spinal Cord Injury - Traumatic Brain Injury - Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Services - Pact Committee - Amputation System of Care - Regional Amputation Center (RAC) - and Service Member Amputation Rehabilitation programs
• Assists in planning - developing - and directing an Orthotic-Prosthetic Laboratory and related clinical activities at the national - VISN - or local level
• Serves as an advisor to physicians - therapists - and other medical professionals with regard to indications and contradictions of prosthetic and orthotic componentry
• Authorizes the purchase - fabrication - or repair of prosthetic devices
• Maintains continuous liaison with manufacturers and dealers of prosthetic supplies - inspecting their facilities and services as well as - participating in the award of prosthetic appliance contracts
• Participates in investigative research project studies by selecting patients as piolet wearers of newly developed prosthetic items - evaluates the usefulness of such items and compiles the data
• Gives technical and administrative advice and assistance on prosthetic problems to other facilities
• Maintains close liaison with RAC Orthotist/Prosthetist
• Follows applicable laws - rules - regulations - and procedures to ensure patient privacy
• Observes appropriate infection control guidelines
• Follows environmental and occupational safety guidelines
• Communicates and responds orally or in writing with patients and management as required
• Other duties in the scope of practice may be required
• Work Schedule: Monday - Friday - 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
