Summary: The custodian is primarily responsible for performing floor cleaning and housekeeping activities as assigned throughout the facility according to established schedules, standards and guidelines as assigned by the Di-rector of Environmental Services. He/She performs these activities using proper cleaning and disinfecting techniques, proper care and use of equipment, and economical use of supplies. The custodian interacts daily with residents and performs these activities in a manner consistent with ensuring resident rights, safety and dignity.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, service manuals, labels, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence, work orders, and maintaining records.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations to residents or management.
  • Must have listening skills to interpret concerns and follow directions.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving variables in standardized situations.
  • Some knowledge of or experience with institutional floor cleaning methods preferred.
  • Must be able to safely perform all essential job functions without harm to self or others with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • The ability to operate commercial floor cleaning equipment, move furniture, beds, tables, etc., or lift cleaning equipment such as vacuum cleaners, 5 gallon buckets of water or chemicals, and operate power washer. This requires the ability to push, pull, and lift from 25-75 pounds unassisted (constantly).

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or general education diploma (GED).

Essential Functions:

  • Clean dining room chairs, tables and floors.
  • Dry mops and wet mops floors.
  • Washes and spot-cleans walls as required (painted, ceramic and wall covered walls).
  • Washes windows and mirrors.
  • Maintains the areas assigned and other areas as needed (such as cleaning up spills, picking up paper, wiping marks/finger prints/other items).
  • Follows schedules, policies and procedures as required.
  • Sweeps, vacuums carpets and spot cleans as required.
  • Strip and buff floors.
  • Moves and cleans behind furniture.
  • Cleans/disinfects public areas (i.e., bathrooms including walls, floors, fixtures, etc., lounges, dining areas and replenishes supplies throughout the building as needed.
  • Maintains a clean and sanitary atmosphere for all the staff who work in the facilities of the Birmingham Green (offices, lounges, public areas, etc.).
  • Gathers trash and other refuse for disposal; delivers to outside trash compactor. Cleans and re-lines wastebaskets.
  • Removes curtains, drapes, shower curtains, and other window treatments for cleaning; submits to Laundry department and rehangs upon return. Changes incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs.
  • Report repairs, supplies and equipment needs to the Director of Environmental Services. In the absence of the Director of Environmental Services, report emergency repairs to the Director of Facilities Services.
  • Performs emergency cleaning activities when accidents occur or when requested by supervisory staff.
  • Assist in other types of maintenance when necessary.
  • Must be able to lift without restrictions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Related Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Cross trains to be laundry worker if the need arises to fill position.
  • Maintains a polite and accommodating attitude to all services companies working within the facility.
  • Responsive to the needs of all persons visiting the facility.
  • Deals well with mentally stressful situations involving residents.
  • Adheres to organization, federal and state regulations and guidelines, including Resident Rights.
  • Participates in orientation and training and in-service programs.
  • Assists other staff members as needed within the limits of training and certification.
