Project Accountant
The Project Accountant is a hybrid corporate role responsible for billing & general ledger accounting support while also providing contract administration support across prime contracts, subcontracts, and task orders. The position ensures accurate financial reporting, disciplined documentation, and strong coordination between Finance, Contracts, and Program/Project leadership. The role supports compliant internal practices for government contracting, including documentation, cost tracking support, and readiness for audits and customer reporting requirements
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Accounting (Staff Accountant Scope)
- Prepare, review, and post journal entries (accruals, allocations, and routine adjustments) with appropriate supervision.
- Create and submit customer billing for Cost-Plus, Time & Materials, and Fixed Price contracts, to include validating labor charges, travel, ODCs, and subcontractor costs.
- Perform balance sheet reconciliations; investigate variances and resolve reconciling items timely.
- Maintain recurring schedules (e.g., prepaid amortization, accrual roll forwards, and other supporting schedules).
- Support month-end and year-end close activities, including tie-outs and financial statement support.
- Assist with indirect cost tracking and related analysis as needed (e.g., allocations, supporting schedules, variance explanations).
- Maintain audit-ready documentation and support internal/external audit requests (including sample support and walkthrough materials).
- Partner with internal stakeholders to ensure transactions are coded appropriately and consistently.
Contracts Administration (Prime/Sub/Task Order Support)
- Assist with contract and subcontract setup, maintenance, and documentation from award through closeout.
- Maintain organized contract files (electronic and/or hardcopy), ensuring required documentation is complete and current.
- Track key contractual elements (e.g., period of performance, funding, ceilings, deliverables, reporting cadence, and special provisions).
- Support contract kickoff and transition activities by compiling key contract terms and distributing internal summaries when needed.
- Coordinate modifications, task order actions, and administrative updates across Finance, Contracts, and Program/Project teams.
- Support internal visibility to funding/burn and contract status by maintaining trackers and producing recurring updates.
- Assist with compliance-related documentation and reporting requirements tied to contract terms and conditions.
Requirements
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
Required:
- Demonstrated experience or education with or in core accounting functions (journal entries, reconciliations, close support, etc....).
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business or related field or 1-2 years of relevant experience can substitute for the degree requirement
- Strong Excel skills (filters, pivots, lookups; ability to work with large datasets accurately).
- High attention to detail with the ability to maintain disciplined, audit-ready documentation.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Professional written and verbal communication skills; ability to coordinate across departments.
Preferred
- Prior experience in government contracting or a regulated contracts environment.
- Familiarity with contract administration practices (file maintenance, modification tracking, deliverables/reporting support).
- Exposure to FAR/DFARS concepts (working knowledge or ability to learn quickly).
- Experience supporting audits (internal/external) and responding to documentation requests.
- Experience in a project accounting environment; familiarity with Unanet and UKG.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: This position functions in a typical office setting. Permanent remote work will not be considered.
POSITION TYPE AND TYPICAL WORK HOURS: Full time Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm.
JOB RELATED TRAVEL: No significant travel is anticipated, but may be requested in rare circumstances
