The Assistant Director for Workforce Development with the Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC) will work directly with the VSGC Director to support strategic planning, coordination, and implementation of the Consortium’s workforce programs. The position will help to build and sustain partnerships with industry, NASA, and other stakeholders to expand the Consortium’s ability to fulfill its mission of STEM workforce development, research, and education.
The Assistant Director will also work with project managers and coordinators as assigned to advise on various projects. These projects will include precollege student programs, teacher professional development programs, higher education student and faculty programs, internship programs, scholarship/fellowship programs and other programs as needed.
The Assistant Director will support the analysis of project data to assess impacts and outcomes to prepare reports and for continuous improvement. The position will represent VSGC at various meetings and other events with stakeholders and sponsors as required. The position may supervise program staff including professional and administrative positions as assigned. The position will also provide public outreach and marketing of Consortium’s programs at local, state, regional, and national conferences and other events.
Master’s Degree in a STEM field, business, or education is required. Education and work experience equivalent to beyond Master’s preferred.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate and manage projects. Demonstrated education leadership in either precollege or higher education setting. Experience working with industry partners and NASA workforce development curriculum preferred.
Good writing and verbal communication skills and experience in grant/proposal writing and development. Demonstrated communications skills with a variety of types and level of audiences. Proven ability to create an effective work environment and to ensure programs and services are of consistent high quality. Resourceful in overcoming obstacles and solving problems. Must be flexible and have the ability to work in a team-based environment. Demonstrated experience managing and leading teams to improve individual and workgroup productivity and quality performance.
The position is based at the Old Dominion University Peninsula Higher Education Center in Hampton, VA. The Virginia Space Grant Consortium is a Consortium of Virginia’s Space Grant universities, NASA Langley Research Center, NASA Wallops Flight Facility, and other organizations with an interest in aviation, aerospace and STEM education, workforce development and research. This NASA/State partnership, which began in 1989, undertakes a wide range of higher education and precollege programs ranging from immersive precollege STEM programs and teacher professional development programs to scholarships, fellowships, internships, student flight and design programs and faculty research awards.
