The Police Policy Writer / Accreditation Specialist is responsible for developing, revising, and maintaining departmental policies, general orders, and directives while supporting the agency’s accreditation program. You will ensure policies are legally compliant, operationally practical, and aligned with Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission (VLEPSC) standards. This position serves in the Police Department at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Researches, drafts, edits, and maintains departmental policies, general orders, and standard operating procedures for review and approval by command staff and the Accreditation Program Manager.
Ensures policy content is clear, concise, legally compliant, and operationally enforceable.
Assists the Accreditation Program Manager in maintaining accreditation files, proofs of compliance, and documentation for audits and assessments.
Conducts periodic policy reviews to identify and recommend revisions to address gaps, redundancies, outdated practices, legislative changes, and evolving accreditation requirements.
Monitors best practices and updates policies to reflect changes in laws, regulations, and law enforcement standards.
Utilizes electronic policy management systems such as PowerDMS and Lexipol to manage and disseminate policy.
Supports training initiatives related to policy updates and implementation.
Collaborates with command staff, legal counsel, and operational units to ensure policies reflect practical and enforceable practices.
Participates in accreditation business meetings, conferences, assessments, and training opportunities conducted by VLEPSC, Virginia Association of CALEA Accreditation Professionals (VACAP), and the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA, and other professional organizations to support departmental accreditation efforts and policy development activities.
Assists with accreditation activities, including internal audits, mock assessments, and reaccreditation processes.
Performs additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Three (3) years of professional experience in law enforcement/public safety operations or, Policy development or analysis, or accreditation or compliance management, or technical or professional writing.
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with a high attention to detail.
Ability to analyze complex legal, operational, and regulatory requirements and translate them into clear, concise, and actionable policy language.
Exceptional technical writing, editing, and document management skills with demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy.
Familiarity with law enforcement procedures, terminology, and organizational structures.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and document management systems.
Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience as a policy writer and/or accreditation specialist within a law enforcement agency.
Familiarity with VLEPSC accreditation standards and processes.
Experience using PowerDMS for policy and accreditation management.
Experience working with Lexipol, including policy customization, updates, and training bulletins.
Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, Public Administration, English, Communications, or a related field.
Certification in accreditation management or professional writing.
EDUCATION
A high school diploma or a Certificate of General Education Development (GED).
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES
Valid driver’s license in good standing.
NECESSARY SPECIAL FACTORS
May be required to pass a polygraph and drug screening.
Must be able to handle sensitive and confidential information.
Primarily office-based with extended computer use; occasional evening or weekend work may be required during accreditation cycles or major policy updates.
