Professional Standards Officer

My client in the Alexandria, VA area is seeking a Professional Standards Officer for a full-time, temporary onsite position. As the Professional Standards Officer, you will lead the administrative investigation process to ensure operations align with core values and legal mandates. Key responsibilities include: - Investigative Leadership (40%): Conduct impartial investigations into misconduct or policy violations. You will develop investigative plans, interview witnesses, analyze evidence, and prepare reports for the Fire Chief. - Compliance & Training (30%): Perform audits for departmental compliance and design training programs to assist supervisors with administrative processes and professional standards. - Recruitment Support (10%): Assist the hiring process by conducting background checks and reviewing polygraph examinations. - Legal & Labor Relations (10%): Liaise with the City Attorney’s Office and Human Resources, advise on collective bargaining agreements, and assist with subpoenas. - Strategic Support (10%): Handle other high-priority duties as assigned by department leadership. Responsibilities

Receive and conducts through, fair and impartial investigations into complaints made regarding employee misconduct, violations of Department policy and procedures, and/or state or federal laws.
Plans, organizes, and conducts interviews with complainants, involve employees, and witness; develops an investigative plan and compiles information, evidence, and supporting documents.

Prepares investigative reports to communicate findings and recommendations to the Fire Chief or designee based on
investigation. Perform regular audits of Department compliance with policies, procedures, applicable laws, standards, and regulations.
Conducts community education and outreach to assess the effectiveness of the Department’s core values.
Serves as a legislative liaison for legislative matters relevant to the Department.

Assist with conducting background checks as needed for those seeking employment. Reviews polygraph examinations on applicants seeking employment and provide guidance as necessary.

Maintains liaison with City Attorney’s Office, Human Resources, and Office of Human Rights.
Assist in answering subpoenas for Department documents or personnel.
Advises on collective bargaining agreements relevant to investigative matters and professional standards.
