Director of Accounting (Gov Con)
Position Title: Director of Accounting
Location: Arlington, VA (Hybrid – 3 days onsite, 2 days remote)
Assignment Type: Permanent Hire
Compensation: $150000 – $180000 / Year
Work Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Job Description
Our client is seeking a Director of Accounting to provide hands-on financial leadership in a growing, multi-entity organization. This highly visible role partners closely with executive leadership and plays a critical part in stabilizing and strengthening accounting operations while supporting forward-looking financial planning and analysis.
This position oversees day-to-day accounting functions, ensures compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements, and provides financial insight to support operational and strategic decision-making. The ideal candidate is a proactive, solutions-oriented leader comfortable building structure, improving processes, and operating in a dynamic environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Accounting Leadership & Operations
- Oversee general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, project accounting, and month-end/year-end close
- Maintain balance sheet integrity, accruals, reconciliations, and financial controls
- Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP and applicable regulatory standards
- Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Supervise accounting staff and coordinate with external accounting partners
- Support audit preparation and financial reporting requirements
Financial Planning & Analysis
- Develop revenue and cash flow forecasts across multiple projects or programs
- Perform variance analysis and financial modeling to support decision-making
- Provide forward-looking financial insights to executive leadership
- Assist with budgeting and financial performance tracking
Business & Operational Support
- Partner cross-functionally with leadership and operations teams
- Support financial modeling and reporting for emerging initiatives or new business lines
- Assist with compliance reporting and external financial reviews
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Prior experience in a project-based or government-regulated environment strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of GAAP
- Advanced Excel skills and financial modeling experience
- Experience with ERP/accounting systems
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing staff
- Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to build processes and operate effectively in evolving environments
- CPA required
