Position Title: Director of Accounting

Location: Arlington, VA (Hybrid – 3 days onsite, 2 days remote)

Assignment Type: Permanent Hire

Compensation: $150000 – $180000 / Year

Work Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Job Description

Our client is seeking a Director of Accounting to provide hands-on financial leadership in a growing, multi-entity organization. This highly visible role partners closely with executive leadership and plays a critical part in stabilizing and strengthening accounting operations while supporting forward-looking financial planning and analysis.

This position oversees day-to-day accounting functions, ensures compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements, and provides financial insight to support operational and strategic decision-making. The ideal candidate is a proactive, solutions-oriented leader comfortable building structure, improving processes, and operating in a dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Accounting Leadership & Operations

• Oversee general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, project accounting, and month-end/year-end close
• Maintain balance sheet integrity, accruals, reconciliations, and financial controls
• Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP and applicable regulatory standards
• Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
• Supervise accounting staff and coordinate with external accounting partners
• Support audit preparation and financial reporting requirements

Financial Planning & Analysis

• Develop revenue and cash flow forecasts across multiple projects or programs
• Perform variance analysis and financial modeling to support decision-making
• Provide forward-looking financial insights to executive leadership
• Assist with budgeting and financial performance tracking

Business & Operational Support

• Partner cross-functionally with leadership and operations teams
• Support financial modeling and reporting for emerging initiatives or new business lines
• Assist with compliance reporting and external financial reviews

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
• 8+ years of progressive accounting experience
• Prior experience in a project-based or government-regulated environment strongly preferred
• Strong knowledge of GAAP
• Advanced Excel skills and financial modeling experience
• Experience with ERP/accounting systems
• Demonstrated leadership experience managing staff
• Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills
• Ability to build processes and operate effectively in evolving environments
• CPA required
