About the Position: This position is in the Defense Health Agency (DHA) under the policy guidance and direction of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (ASD (HA)).

This is a Direct Hire Solicitation.

Duties

Help

  • Function as the Associate Radiation Safety Officer, the organizational subject matter expert in radiation safety, for staff and patients, emergency response, and oversight of ionizing and non-ionizing machines in healthcare.
  • Provide general surveillance of radiation safety activities including personnel, facility and environmental monitoring.
  • Recommend technical procedures to improve, rectify, or improve Radiation Protection Programs.
  • Modify or develop new approaches, methods, techniques, equipment or procedures to identify and/or resolve personnel radiation hazard issues.
  • Facilitate training to users of medical radiation consistent with the statutory requirements of the Code of Federal Regulations.
  • Evaluate work performance of subordinates in order to give advice, counsel, or instruction.
  • Supervises, manages and/or oversees multidisciplinary team of Health Physicists and other scientists.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • One-year supervisory probationary period required. A one-year probationary period is required if the selectee has not previously met this requirement.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Health Physicist:

A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

OR

B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education.

OR

C. Certification: Certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes managing radiation safety programs supporting personnel using radioactive materials or radiation sources; providing technical advice on ionizing radiation, radioactive waste, or radioactive waste disposal in a hospital setting; facilitating medical radiation training to positions such as radiologists, nuclear physicians, endocrinologists, or cardiologists; and providing supervision, leadership, oversight, or direction to employees and their work. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-13).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience aloneno substitution of education for experience is permitted.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
