JOB DESCRIPTION FIRST PRESSMAN
Classification: Non-Exempt Reports to: Printing Manager Date : January 2025
Objective : Directs the crew and performs manual and machine operator tasks related to the set-up, maintenance and operation of the press. Responsible for quantitative and qualitative press performance.Essential Functions

- Lead, give directions to and monitor work of press crew
- Record sheet counts and perform line clearance
- Review job order to determine quantity, stock specifications, colors or special printing instructions
- Verifies copy to customer approval or signed color standard
- Examines printing plate for visual defects and correct or repair minor defects
- Hang plates and register
- Install correct thickness packing under blanket to meet manufacture specs
- Measures paper thickness and adjusts press console so press will operate
- Fills ink, solution fountains and regulate flow of ink and dampening solution to plate cylinder
- Starts press and examines printed copy for ink density, position on paper and registration
- Makes adjustments to maintain specific registration and color density
- Makes adjustments to feeder and delivery mechanism
- Remove plates and clean all cylinders and bearers
- Perform preventative maintenance and minor adjustments
- Daily reporting of performance, quality and other actions related to printing process
- Determine materials needed, organize and delegate accordingly
- Organize job sequences efficiently and seamlessly
- Coordinate, train, develop and mentor crews for optimal production and teamwork results
- Monitoring make ready, maintenance and down time for optimal efficiency
- Proactively troubleshoot, analyze and conceptionalize outcomes
- Comply with safety regulations and maintain clean and orderly work areas
- Other duties as assigned

- Able to work in a fast-paced office with strong motivation and sense of urgency
- Able to understand and read rulers and measurements; understanding of geometry and math to calculate angles and lines of multi-sided shapes
- Advanced communication, organization and time management skills
- Strong mechanical aptitude
- Excellent color identification and visual acuity
Supervisory Responsibility: This position has no supervisory responsibilities but is expected to delegate tasks, coach and assist in the development of team members.
Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work on the production floor, surrounded by other employees. It is fast-paced and requires positive social interaction. The noise level in the work environment can be loud. Use of pallet jack, hand truck, forklift, large format printing presses.
Hazardous Waste Responsibilities
- Responsible for handling and disposing of hazardous waste associated with printing processes in accordance with county, state and/or federal guidelines
- Properly obtain, label and place hazardous waste containers in appropriate storage area
- Respond to hazardous waste emergencies and spills
Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, crouch, walk, reach with hands and arms and use fingers. Vision abilities include: close vison, peripheral vision, depth perception color identification and the ability to adjust focus. Communication abilities include: talking, writing, typing and hearing. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move items up to 50 pounds.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time position, and regular hours vary across three shifts. Overtime may be required when production schedules dictate.
Required Education and Experience: High school diploma/GED and completion of press apprenticeship program, or an equivalent number of years of education and 5 years of experience in paper/packaging/folding carton manufacturing.
Preferred Education and Experience: Bi-lingual
Additional Eligibility Qualifications: Legally eligible to work in the United States and successful completion of background and drug screens.
