Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Surgical PCU (Progressive Care Unit) position at a Level I Trauma, Magnet-designated teaching hospital in Roanoke, VA, with ventilator experience required.
Details
- Work setting is a large acute care hospital (700+ licensed beds) recognized as a Level I Trauma Center, Magnet-designated, and a teaching hospital affiliated with Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
- Unit functions as a stepdown from the General Surgical ICU, with a bariatric specialty and backup support to the trauma unit
- Patient population includes post-surgical, bariatric, and trauma patients, including 2 beds dedicated to chronic trach patients (non-ICU level)
- Typical nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:5, with a staffing goal of 1:4
- Equipment used includes ortho equipment, chest tubes, surgical drains, trach, endo tools, PICC lines, and multi-lumen catheters (MML)
- IV drips managed include Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low-dose Dopamine/Dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitroglycerin, Bumex, Lasix, Lidocaine, and Ketamine (no titration required)
- Respiratory support includes nasal cannula, oxygen administration, CPAP, and BiPAP
- Remote telemetry monitoring with monitors remaining on the unit; tele sitting is implemented to support Patient Care Tech coverage
- Epic EMR experience is required
- Schedule is 4x12-hour night shifts, 6:45 PM – 7:15 AM
- Weekend requirement is every other weekend (EOW) or 6 weekend shifts per 6-week scheduling block
- One holiday must be worked per 13-week contract period
- Floating within skillset is required, including across PCU, DOU, IMC, and stepdown unit settings
- Contract length is up to 26 weeks
Requirements
- Active Virginia state or Compact RN license required; pending licensure is accepted only for candidates holding a single-state license from a non-compact state
- Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Ventilator care experience required, specifically for chronic trach patients
- Proficiency in cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, and emergency response
- Experience with IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, and central/peripheral line care
- Familiarity with cardiac drip management (Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, Amiodarone, etc.) without titration
- Experience with Rapid Response and Code team activation
- Epic EMR experience required
- Two professional references required for consideration
- Copy of driver's license and Social Security card required for consideration

- Responsibilities include providing stepdown-level care to post-surgical, bariatric, and trauma patients with complex needs including vent management, cardiac monitoring, and advanced respiratory support
- Isolation precaution protocols are followed across applicable unit settings
