Senior Data Scientist

GXM is seeking to hire a Senior Data Scientist to lead advanced data science efforts in support of innovation programs for our clients. The selected candidate will apply advanced data science techniques, including Python, R, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and large language models, to analyze complex datasets and deliver actionable insights that inform decision-making and program outcomes. This is a full-time, exempt position that may be performed remotely with short-term travel as required by the project. This position will be based out of Fredericksburg, VA with occasional travel to Dahlgren, VA.

The candidate will lead data analysis activities, guide analytical approaches and methodologies, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure analytical outputs are accurate, relevant, and aligned with program objectives. Responsibilities include assessing complex and evolving datasets, identifying trends and patterns, and supporting the maturation and transition of innovative technologies.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Apply data science and advanced analytics techniques to support innovation and evaluation programs

• Develop and analyze taxonomies and structured data models

• Design and apply ranking and scoring methodologies for project evaluation processes

• Assess evaluator performance, trends, and consistency across evaluation cycles

• Identify weak signals and emerging patterns across datasets

• Analyze technology trends over multiple years and across varying submission datasets

• Develop automated workflows to process and analyze large volumes of structured and unstructured data

• Produce clear, data-driven reports and visualizations to communicate findings and insights

Requirements

• Ten (10) or more years of professional experience in data science, analytics, applied statistics, or related technical fields

• Advanced experience with software integration, testing, and validation, including analyzing and implementing test plans, scripts, and data pipelines

• Advanced proficiency in scripting and programming languages such as Python and R, including extensive use of data science, machine learning, and analytics libraries

• Experience using programming languages and products such as Python, Jupyter Notebook, Pandas, Numpy, Requests, or Antigravity.

• Demonstrated expertise in data science, data mining, statistics, machine learning, or graph algorithms to support complex analytics objectives

• Experience leading or owning the production and delivery of data analysis reports and briefings using SQL, Microsoft Excel, and advanced data visualization tools

• Ability to lead collaboration efforts across multidisciplinary teams and management, ensuring analytical outcomes are measurable, repeatable, and aligned to mission objectives

• Strong working knowledge of emerging technology topics and trends, with the ability to assess relevance and maturity

• Demonstrated understanding of technology transition challenges, including adoption barriers and operational constraints

• Advanced experience applying statistics and probability theory to guide analysis, validate models, and ensure analytical rigor

• Proven ability to design and implement automated workflows and data pipelines to process large and complex datasets

• Advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with demonstrated ability to identify patterns, synthesize insights, and provide actionable recommendations

• Proven proficiency with Microsoft Office and collaboration tools, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, MS Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive

• Experience applying Structured Query Language (SQL), Non-Structured Query Language (NoSQL), Application Program Interface (API) Building, Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) pipelines, Web Application Servers, or Search Index.

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience working with mission-driven organizations and end users within the Department of War.
