Job Summary
Hill House Nursery is seeking an Ecological Landscape Designer to create thoughtful, sustainable outdoor spaces rooted in native plant ecology. This role blends creative landscape design with a strong understanding of botany, horticulture, and environmental systems. You’ll collaborate with nursery staff, meet with clients, develop CAD based plans, and guide projects from concept through installation. Ideal candidates bring experience with ecological design, stormwater features such as rain gardens and bioswales, and a working knowledge of regional native plants. Strong communication and project management skills are essential, along with a passion for designing landscapes that support biodiversity and long-term ecological health.

Responsibilities
- Design ecologically sound landscapes using primarily native plants
- Collaborate with nursery staff on plant selection and production needs
- Create detailed plans and drawings using CAD software
- Meet with clients to understand goals, preferences, and budgets
- Assess ecological impacts of proposed designs
- Coordinate with contractors, engineers, and other professionals
- Monitor project progress from design through installation
- Maintain accurate records of design work and project milestones
- Stay current on ecological design principles, native plants, and sustainable landscape practices
- Help staff regional plant sale events and assist with sales at the Nursery as needed
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in landscape architecture, Ecology, or related field preferred
- 1–3 years of experience in landscape design, environmental planning, or related roles
- Proficiency with CAD tools (AutoCAD, SketchUp, ProLandscape, etc.)
- Experience designing ecological landscapes, including stormwater features (rain gardens, bioswales)
- Strong knowledge of local and regional native plants and their ecological relationships
- Excellent communication, project management, and problem-solving skills

Additional Details
- Location: Woodville, VA
- Pay Range: $48,000–$60,000, based on experience
- Work Environment: Mix of office, fieldwork, and site visits; some travel required
- Reports To: Nursery Chief of Operations
- Employment Type: Full-time, 40 hours/week with some weekends required during the plant sale season
