Student Worker - Univ. of Virginia-Observatory
Job Description
UVA Dine is seeking enthusiastic and reliable Student Food Service Workers to join our team at Observatory Hill Dining Room . This role offers a flexible opportunity for students to gain valuable work experience while contributing to a positive and efficient dining environment for their peers, faculty, and guests in a large, high-volume dining hall setting. Student Food Service Workers will assist with various tasks related to food preparation, service, and maintaining cleanliness.
Hourly Rate: $16
Benefits include a Block 25 meal plan
*First year students receive $200 dining dollars
Job Responsibilities
- Assist with basic food preparation tasks, such as washing and cutting fruits/vegetables, setting up ingredients, and stocking various serving stations (e.g., salad bar, hot line, beverage stations).
- Serve food items to students and guests on the serving lines, ensuring proper portion control and presentation.
- Operate point-of-sale (POS) systems, handle cash and credit card transactions accurately, if assigned.
- Provide friendly, efficient, and helpful customer service to all diners, answering questions and assisting with needs.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of dining areas, serving lines, and workstations throughout the shift.
- Follow all food safety and sanitation procedures, including proper handling, storage, and temperature control of food items.
- Assist with dishwashing, bussing tables, and general cleaning tasks in the dining room and kitchen areas as needed.
- Restock food items, beverages, condiments, and supplies on the serving lines and in dining areas.
- Adhere to all university and dining services policies and procedures.
- Work collaboratively with other team members to ensure smooth and efficient meal service during peak hours.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled as a student at the University of Virginia or a local educational institution.
- Ability to read, write, and understand basic instructions.
- Ability to perform basic math calculations for cash handling (if applicable).
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, to accommodate academic schedules and dining operational needs.
- Prior food service or customer service experience is a plus, but not required.

- Ability to bend, stoop, and reach as needed.
