Job Title: Quality Inspector – Packaging Operations
Job Description
The Quality Inspector plays a key role in ensuring that packaged products meet stringent global and local quality standards within a modern manufacturing and warehouse environment. This position focuses on visual, functional, and dimensional inspections, supports quality and EHS processes, and collaborates closely with production, engineering, and QEHS teams to maintain high levels of product quality, safety, and operational excellence.
Responsibilities
- Perform visual, functional, and dimensional inspections of packed products in accordance with global and local quality standards.
- Conduct AQL sampling and packing process audits to verify adherence to quality standards and documented work instructions.
- Identify, contain, and disposition non-conforming material following approved procedures, ensuring proper traceability and supporting root cause analysis.
- Generate and maintain daily quality reports, update visual management boards, and clearly communicate quality performance during shift debriefs.
- Support production teams through investigations, Go Look See activities, and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
- Assist Quality Engineers with data collection, sample measurement, monitoring of production runs, and investigations related to external complaints.
- Coordinate and execute First Production Release (FPR) activities for new or modified products, ensuring all requirements are met before release.
- Maintain and update sample collection lists, and ensure timely physical collection, verification, documentation, and shipment of samples to internal and external stakeholders.
- Complete and maintain FPR documentation in SharePoint and other required systems, ensuring accurate and up-to-date records.
- Initiate and follow up on corrective actions identified during FPR activities or process audits to drive continuous improvement.
- Support implementation and confirmation of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) Management System processes within the packing area.
- Participate in incident management activities, including initial incident reporting, investigation support, and follow-up on corrective actions.
- Actively promote safe behaviors, hazard identification, and incident prevention, and escalate unsafe conditions immediately.
- Support emergency response activities as required and confirm compliance with EHS procedures, contributing to ongoing EHS improvements.
- Support training and coaching of packing and quality team members on quality methods, standards, and best practices.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Production, Engineering, and QEHS colleagues to improve process capability, compliance, and audit readiness.
- Maintain 5S standards within assigned areas to support a clean, organized, and efficient work environment.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support operational needs across the packaging and quality functions.
Essential Skills
- 2–4 years of experience in manufacturing, quality, or QEHS-related roles, including at least 3 years of quality experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Hands-on experience with quality inspection activities, including visual inspection and quality checks on packaged products.
- Working knowledge of quality systems, inspections, and non-conformance management processes.
- Experience with quality auditing and packing operations, including AQL sampling and process audits.
- Ability to perform root cause analysis and support corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
- Ability to read and understand basic technical and quality documentation, procedures, and work instructions.
- Basic to intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Outlook, and Word.
- Ability to work with and understand validation, testing equipment, and production equipment as they relate to quality control.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in inspection, documentation, and data entry.
- Ability to meet vision and color differentiation requirements necessary for effective visual inspection.
- Capability to stand and walk for extended periods during a shift and perform repetitive inspection tasks.
- Ability to lift, push, or pull materials up to approximately 35 lbs in a manufacturing and warehouse environment.
- Comfort working around moving equipment, noise, and varying temperatures while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ability to work a 3-2-2-3 schedule and adapt to operational demands on the production floor.
Work Environment
The role is based in a very clean, state-of-the-art facility that houses packaging operations, warehouse functions, and a training center. The site is planned to remain open until 2028, with a larger facility being developed that will include substantially more equipment, greater square footage, and additional quality positions supporting both brick manufacturing and packaging. You will work in a manufacturing environment with moving equipment, typical production noise, and controlled temperatures around 72 degrees year-round. The position involves extensive walking, including spending time in multiple departments on the floor and performing 12-hour shifts under a 3-2-2-3 schedule. Quality inspectors will initially be assigned to a specific line to learn processes and will perform repetitive examination of packages as they come off the machines. You must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, lift up to approximately 35 lbs, and wear required PPE. Strict rules around dress code and personal items, such as jewelry and cell phones, are in place to maintain safety and product integrity. An iPad will be assigned for use in the role to support inspections, documentation, and communication.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Colonial Heights, VA.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $26.73 - $29.40/hr.
