Director of Human Resources

Reports to: Chief of Staff and Operations Officer Position Summary
The Executive Director of Human Resources serves as the College’s senior HR leader, responsible for the strategic direction and effective operation of all human resources functions at Ferrum College. This role ensures a high-performing, compliant, and service-oriented HR function that supports the institution’s mission, workforce needs, and culture.
The Executive Director oversees core areas including recruitment, onboarding, payroll, benefits, employee relations, performance management, and compliance. This individual serves as a trusted and confidential advisor on personnel matters and works closely with senior leadership to align human capital strategies with institutional priorities. Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Operations
- Lead and manage all HR operations, ensuring efficient, accurate, and responsive service delivery.
- Oversee recruitment, onboarding, retention, and separation processes.
- Develop and implement HR policies, procedures, and systems aligned with institutional goals.
- Supervise and support HR staff, fostering a collaborative and service-oriented team.
- Oversee functions related to payroll, benefits, employee records, and student employment.
- Ensure accurate and compliant payroll and benefits administration.
- Oversee employee leave programs, including FMLA.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable employment laws and regulations (FLSA, FMLA, ADA, EEO, Title VII, Title IX).
- Support Title IX coordination and ensure appropriate policies, training, and response protocols are in place.
- Oversee required reporting (e.g., IPEDS) and maintain audit-ready documentation.
- Serve as a confidential resource for employee concerns.
- Lead employee relations efforts, including conflict resolution, investigations, and performance management.
- Support supervisors and promote a respectful, inclusive, and engaged workplace.
- Maintain accurate employee records and analyze HR data to support decision-making.
- Oversee updates to employee handbooks and HR policies.
- Collaborate with campus partners and represent the College in HR-related matters.
- Advise senior leadership on HR, organizational, and compliance matters.
- Ensure continuity of HR operations and perform other duties as assigned.
Required:
- Master’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field (Bachelor’s with significant experience may be considered).
- 7–10 years of progressive HR experience, including leadership responsibility.
- Strong knowledge of employment laws and HR best practices.
- Demonstrated supervisory experience and sound judgment.
- High level of discretion, professionalism, and communication skills.
- Experience in higher education or similarly regulated environment.
- Knowledge of Title IX.
- HR certification (PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP).
