Baker - Univ. of Virginia-Observatory

The Baker at Observatory Hill is a key member of our culinary team, responsible for preparing a wide variety of fresh breads, pastries, and other baked goods. A core part of this role will be making and preparing fresh pizza dough for our in-house concepts. The ideal candidate has a passion for baking, a strong understanding of food safety, and the ability to work efficiently in a high-volume, dynamic dining environment. This role requires precision, creativity, and a commitment to producing high-quality products that meet our standards.

Hourly Pay Rate: $16-18

Job Responsibilities

• Dough Preparation: Prepare and create various types of dough, with a specific emphasis on making fresh pizza dough from scratch daily.

• Baking Production: Bake a wide range of products, including breads, pastries, cakes, and other baked goods, ensuring consistency and quality.

• Recipe Adherence: Follow all standardized recipes and portioning guidelines to maintain consistency and control food costs.

• Sanitation & Safety: Maintain a clean and organized work station, adhering to all food safety and sanitation regulations.

• Inventory Management: Monitor and track inventory of baking ingredients, notifying management of any shortages or necessary orders.

• Collaboration: Work closely with the culinary team to coordinate baking schedules and support other kitchen functions as needed.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a Baker or in a similar culinary role, with experience in a high-volume setting.

• Specific experience with dough preparation and baking from scratch is highly preferred.

• Knowledge of proper food handling, sanitation, and safety procedures.

• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks.

• Strong attention to detail and a passion for creating high-quality baked goods.

• Physical ability to stand for extended periods, and lift up to 25 pounds.

This role may have physical demands including, but not limited to, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling and/or extended walking and standing. This role may also require uniforms and/or usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
