Associate Director for STEM Success

Commonwealth of Virginia
Charlottesville, VA

: The Georges Student Center invites applications for a new position, Associate Director for STEM Success. The associate director will work as part of the team at the Dathel and John Georges Student Center. The Center's STEM-focused academic support programs first launched in 2020 and have expanded to serve students enrolled in many of UVA's gateway courses in biology, chemistry, math, and physics. These programs, called Peer Led Learning (P2L) and Peer Academic Coaching (PAC) seek to increase student learning and foster a collaborative and growth-oriented STEM culture through academic support programs that employ undergraduate students in peer educator roles. This work is part of a broader project at UVA to foster student learning in STEM classes and to retain students into STEM majors. This project engages faculty, academic departments, and staff, and our approach to academic support reflects this broader effort: We start with faculty, collaborating with them to tailor our support to their courses and pedagogy. We also seek to actively encourage students who are most in need of support to engage with our programs. This approach requires relationships, communication, persistence, flexibility, and creativity, and we seek an Associate Director who can lead the work of a team in a way that will embody this collaborative approach. Duties The associate director will have two sets of responsibilities: 1) overseeing operations of the Center's academic support programs, and 2) fostering collaborative relationships and practices among the Center, course faculty, departments, and related support programs in schools and Student Affairs. We seek an Associate Director who can help our young programs to mature and to play an active role in fostering a collaborative, learning-oriented STEM culture among our students and faculty. Specific duties will include:
  • Work with the Director of Academic Student Support to develop strategy and goals
  • Strengthen relationships and structures that help to ensure that students in need of support are connected with resources
  • Identify and develop opportunities for collaboration across units
  • Supervise professional staff (currently 3) who coordinate P2L and PAC services
  • Manage assessment and deliver reports for P2L and PAC
  • Serve on cross-University committees related to student or STEM support
  • Support program attendance software used by the Center and our partners
  • Track and plan expenditures
  • Contribute to peer educator training programs for use by our programs and outside groups
  • Be responsive to faculty and staff inquiries, communicating proactively and consistently
Qualifications As these programs are still young, we seek a candidate who is enthusiastic about helping to shape the programs' practices and who can adapt as those programs mature. A commitment to creating environments and programs which support the inclusion and achievement of students of all backgrounds and identities is vital. The person in this position must have excellent communication skills, including speaking and writing, in order to be effective in building relationships with faculty, academic departments, and partners around the University. As the program will primarily support students enrolled in STEM courses, preference will be given to candidates who have a degree or work experience in a quantitative or scientific field.
