Vineyard Manager

Located in Madison, Virginia, at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Early Mountain Vineyards includes a gorgeous tasting room, onsite wine production, and two estate vineyards, with a total of approximately 50 planted acres. We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Vineyard Manager to oversee our vineyard operations, working under the direction of the Winemaker & Viticulturist. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of managing complex vineyard operations, a commitment to sustainable farming practices, and a deep passion for producing exceptional wines. This role requires a hands-on leader who is not only adept at the technical aspects but also possesses strong leadership skills to effectively guide and support our vineyard team. The Vineyard Manager will be responsible for improving vineyard performance and production quality while ensuring that all activities align with operational goals and budgets.

Job Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Directly manage all vineyard operations, including pruning, shoot and leaf removal, crop thinning, and harvest, as well as weed control and disease and pest mitigation
• Supervise and motivate our experienced vineyard crew and coordinate all vineyard logistics
• Provide frequent training for the crew regarding safety and quality grape production
• Regularly scout all vineyard blocks, including occasional visits to outside growers
• Monitor vine and soil health, implementing supplements as needed
• Maintain inventory of all vineyard chemicals, as well as accurate records for all vineyard chemical applications
• Maintain detailed records of vineyard maps, activities, milestones, inputs, and yields
• Coordinate outside contractors, including scheduling, timelines, and compliance
• Collaborate with the Winemaker & Viticulturist on budgeting, schedules, and data management
• Develop and execute long-term vineyard plans, working closely with upper management
• Oversee all vineyard equipment operation and maintenance
• Ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations and standards
• Schedule H-2A crew and support entire process including coordinating housing, transportation, payroll, record-keeping, and compliance

Qualifications:
• Minimum of five years of experience in vineyard management
• Familiarity with vineyard equipment operation
• Conversational proficiency in Spanish
• Highly organized with ability to prioritize and multi-task
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with high attention to detail
• Proficiency in MS Excel and Word, as well as general computer skills
• Bachelors or Masters degree in Viticulture, Agriculture, or related field
• Valid Virginia pesticide applicator’s license (or ability to obtain)

Other Requirements:
• Ability to perform physical labor year-round in all kinds of weather
• Ability to lift 60 lbs. on a regular basis
• Valid VA Driver’s License
• Willingness to work long hours and many days per week
• Self-motivated with the ability to work independently
• Excellent supervisory and time management skills
• Collaborative approach to leadership
• A positive attitude, sense of humor, and a strong work ethic
• Satisfactory completion of company background check
