Job Opportunity: Outside Machinist

Location: Norfolk, VA

Pay: $26-$28/hr.

Schedule: Full-Time, Contract | 40 hrs per week

About the Role

We are seeking skilled Outside Machinists to support shipyard operations in Norfolk, VA. This role involves mechanical installation, overhaul, alignment, and repair of shipboard propulsion and auxiliary systems using both portable and fixed machining tools.

Key Responsibilities

• Remove, repair, overhaul, install, and align propulsion machinery and auxiliary mechanical systems (condensers, compressors, pumps, forced-draft blowers, main feed pumps, valves, etc.).
• Install, adjust, and repair control, regulating, and safety devices including meters, gauges, valves, governors, and alarm systems.
• Assist with or perform operational testing of shipboard machinery and mechanical assemblies.
• Lay out passage holes on bulkheads, decks, and other ship structures to support mechanical system routing (e.g., shafting, steam lines).
• Utilize portable and fixed machining tools such as boring bars, mills, drill presses, and lathes.
• Use precision measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, depth gauges, height gauges, tape measures) to validate tolerances and alignments.
• Work collaboratively with shipyard teams and support project timelines that may require weekends and overtime.

Requirements

• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and mechanical drawings.
• Experience operating and setting up machining equipment and hand/power tools.
• Strong mechanical aptitude with working knowledge of propulsion and auxiliary systems.
• Comfortable working in a team-driven environment in a shipyard or industrial setting.
• Willing and able to work overtime, weekends, and extended schedules as needed.
