What You’ll Do
As part of the Equipment Operator team, you will play a crucial role in maintaining the city’s waste management systems. Work assignments may include:
City vehicles, light trucks, and equipment undergo regular preventive maintenance and service. Inspections are conducted to identify any maintenance requirements, safety issues, worn parts, leaks, or operational problems. Standard diagnostic tools and computerized systems are used to detect issues in mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, brake, steering, suspension, exhaust, and other vehicle systems. Repair and Diagnostics
Perform routine to moderately complex repairs on vehicle parts such as brakes, tires, batteries, and more. Assistance is provided to higher-level mechanics with complex diagnostics and major repairs, including engine and transmission work. Test driving vehicles and operating equipment are part of the process to ensure repairs are successful. Communication and Documentation
Complete work orders, documenting services performed, and maintaining accurate maintenance records. Communication with supervisors, mechanics, departments, vendors, and suppliers is crucial for discussing repair status and service issues. The role also involves responding to basic road service calls, preparing seasonal equipment, and operating special equipment like snow trucks when licensed or trained.
Automotive Mechanic II
Preventive Maintenance and RepairConduct preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on City vehicles and equipment. It includes using diagnostic tools to address mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues and performing repairs on components like brakes and tires. Vehicles are test-driven to confirm repairs. Technical Support and Assistance
Assist senior mechanics with major repairs and advanced diagnostics. Offer technical support to junior mechanics and communicate repair status and service needs with supervisors and vendors. This position will also respond to emergency repair calls. Documentation and Safety Compliance
Complete work orders, documenting maintenance activities, and maintaining clean and safe work environments. Employees order and verify parts, follow safety procedures, and perform state inspections if certified. They may also operate specialized equipment when licensed.
Automotive Mechanic III
Diagnostic and Repair ResponsibilitiesConducts advanced maintenance and repairs on diverse City vehicles and equipment, diagnosing complex mechanical and system issues with specialized tools. Performs significant repairs on key components such as engines and transmissions, using skills in welding and fabrication. Technical Guidance and Coordination
Offers technical support and guidance to junior mechanics, assists in training them on repair techniques and safety. Evaluates completed repairs for quality and decides whether repairs should be managed internally or outsourced. Communication and Documentation
Engages with supervisors and vendors regarding repair processes, manages detailed work orders and records. Handles emergency repair calls, ensuring swift and effective problem resolution.

Minimum Qualifications & Special Requirements: Automotive Mechanic I
- High School diploma or GED equivalent;
- Two (2) years of experience in automotive, equipment, diesel, fleet, or related mechanical repair work; or
- Completion of a recognized automotive/diesel technology program and one year of related experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within a specified period, a valid Commercial Driver’s License appropriate for assigned duties.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within a specified period, a Virginia State Inspection License, if required for assigned duties.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within a specified period, a flagging certification issued by the Virginia Department of Transportation.
- May be required to obtain job-related certifications, training, or licenses based on department needs, assigned equipment, or operational requirements.

- Three (3) years of experience in automotive, equipment, diesel, fleet, or related mechanical repair work; or
- Completion of a recognized automotive/diesel technology program and two years of related experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education , training, and experience.

- High School diploma or GED equivalent;
- Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in automotive, equipment, diesel, fleet, or related mechanical repair work; or
- Completion of a recognized automotive/diesel technology program and three years of progressively responsible related experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within a specified period, a valid Commercial Driver’s License appropriate for assigned duties.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within a specified period, a Virginia State Inspection License, if required for assigned duties.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within a specified period, a flagging certification issued by the Virginia Department of Transportation.
- May be required to obtain job-related certifications, training, or licenses based on department needs, assigned equipment, or operational requirements.
Work Environment
These positions require heavy physical labor in automotive and fleet maintenance, involving frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting. Workers regularly handle tools and materials up to 50 pounds, with occasional heavier items. Visual and auditory skills are crucial for identifying vehicle issues. The work environment is mainly a fleet maintenance shop, with some outdoor tasks, exposing workers to mechanical parts, noise, and hazards. Personal protective equipment and safety protocols are mandatory, and employees may need to respond to urgent repairs or emergencies.
