Position Summary The Senior Director of Advancement Events is a leader on the Strategic Events team in University Marketing at William & Mary. University Marketing includes all William & Mary efforts to develop and execute marketing programs and campaigns that increase brand identity, perception and awareness across three core areas enrollment, advancement and institutional reputation. William & Mary's ability to flourish and advance as a preeminent university depends largely on our ability to drive competitive application and enrollment metrics, ensure long-term financial sustainability, and raise W&M's profile on a national and global scale. The Senior Director reports to the Executive Director of Strategic Events and is responsible for the strategic development and management of events across the university to build and sustain a culture of engagement and philanthropy for the entire William & Mary constituent community. As the team lead for a dynamic department responsible for both alumni and donor engagement events, the Senior Director is the architect and manager of local, state, national and international strategic event experiences and strategic event programing to engage, cultivate and educate donors, friends and alumni to encourage their increasing support to William & Mary, working closely with campus partners and Deans across the university. The Senior Director also oversees event marketing and messaging across donor and alumni engagement events programming. The successful Senior Director of Advancement Events will be an innovator who will foster a culture of belonging that embraces all people and perspectives. This is a hybrid position based in Williamsburg, Virginia, that offers a flexible work environment. - Substantive experience managing the full event planning cycle for large audiences and participants (typically 5+ years).
- Experience supervising and motivating staff within in a highly matrixed collaborative environment (typically 5+ years).
- Outstanding interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, with the proven ability to work collaboratively as a team player as well as develop and foster communication and teamwork with a diverse audience including alumni, donors, faculty, staff, students and the University community.
- Experience managing a budget (typically 5+ years).
Preferred Qualifications - Experience working with VIPs such as elected officials, celebrities, or affluent visitors (typically 5+ years).
- Experience creating and promoting events through various communication channels (typically 5+ years).
- Demonstrated relevant success in leading volunteer committees.
- Experience overseeing site selection, program development, strategic outlook and moving all planning details forward positively to ensure consistent event experiences and messaging.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze issues or roadblocks and effectively bring resolution.
- Demonstrated success using data and analytics to measure and drive program development and improvement.
