Senior Manager, Government Relations
The Senior Manager, Government Relations, advances AIHA’s federal public policy priorities by coordinating and supporting member-driven advocacy with Congress, federal agencies, and partnering organizations. This role does not engage in direct lobbying. Instead, it focuses on mobilizing, training, and empowering AIHA members and volunteer leaders to advocate effectively on behalf of the association. The Senior Manager leads the development and execution of strategies, resources, and advocacy campaigns to increase member engagement and advance AIHA’s top policy objectives. The position ensures full compliance with relevant legal and ethical standards and provides timely policy analysis and recommendations to AIHA leadership. This role reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitor, analyze, and track legislative and regulatory activity on priority issues
- Provide training, resources, and guidance to members to effectively advocate for AIHA’s priorities
- Coordinate with AIHA volunteers to develop comments to Members of Congress and agency leaders; prepare testimony for hearings; and organize remote and in-person meetings among policymakers, members, and the CEO as needed
- Conduct a periodic review of AIHA’s public policy priorities and recommend updates as needed
- Regularly assess and report on the effectiveness of advocacy campaigns and member participation
- Develop and manage content on AIHA’s public affairs web pages, including our Grassroots Advocacy Center
- Author advocacy materials, action alerts, and other communications for member use
- Coordinate with AIHA’s marketing department on creation of media alerts, social media posts, and other external facing communications
- Ensure all advocacy activities comply with applicable laws and ethical standards, maintaining a clear distinction between member-driven and direct lobbying
- Oversee and coordinate efforts with AIHA’s outsourced government relations contractor, which is tasked with managing state affairs; liaise and communicate with AIHA’s local sections (chapters) to assist in support of respective state legislative and/or regulatory matters.
- Serve as AIHA’s representative to the Workplace EHS Coalition (an informal group of occupational and environmental health and safety nonprofits whose focus is on shared advocacy; perform other related duties as assigned.
- Work with CEO to develop annual budget and projections, monitor income and expenses, and ensure the maintenance of accurate and detailed records
- Work with CEO to execute, monitor, and oversee performance on relevant contracts and ensure compliance with all contractual requirements
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required in political science, public policy, or related field. In lieu of a degree, 15 plus years of experience will be considered.
- Required:
- 5-7 years of Government Relations experience working with legislators, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
- Proficiency with legislative procedures including analyzing bills and conducting legislative research
- Preferred :
- Master’s degree in related area
- Association or nonprofit experience
- Familiarity with State OSHA programs
- Experience with legislative advocacy and grassroots mobilization
- Be disciplined, focused, and determined with excellent follow-up
- Be entrepreneurial and self-directed
- Skilled with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- A demonstrated high level of attention to detail
- Excellent writing and public speaking skills
- Be occasionally willing to work longer than normal hours, particularly during periods of intense legislative or regulatory activity when deadlines for action are short
- Have excellent writing and public speaking skills
- Be able to work independently, manage groups of volunteers, and establish/meet deadlines
- Highly skilled in distilling and clearly conveying key messages.
- Proven track record of developing relationships with key influencers.
- Substantive knowledge of how Washington operates, as well as the ability to coordinate strategies at state and local levels.
Travel to the annual conference may be required for this position Residency Requirement
Based on our business set-up and to maximize hybrid work opportunities, AIHA only employs individuals who live in Washington, DC, Maryland, or Virginia. To be considered, a candidate must live in, or be willing to relocate to, Washington, DC, Maryland, or Virginia . Salary
The pay for this position ranges from $85,000-$95,000k based on experience and education. Benefits
