Lead Primary Montessori Guide

Wild Fern Montessori School
Richmond, VA

Job Description

Job Description

As Primary Lead Teacher, you are the heartbeat of the classroom—planning and sustaining a beautifully prepared environment for ages 3–6, mentoring your classroom assistants, and serving as a trusted partner to families.

Planning & Instruction

  • Implement progressive AMI Montessori lessons across all classroom areas and maintain a carefully prepared, aesthetically inviting environment

  • Guide individual child plans using observations, albums, software, and portfolios; maintain accurate progress records

  • Manage classroom flow, rhythm, and the work cycle with skill and calm

  • Order materials and manage the classroom budget responsibly

Family Communication

  • Build warm, consistent communication with each family; send weekly newsletters and lead parent conferences

  • Educate and engage families in the Montessori philosophy; respond to questions promptly and professionally

Leadership & Professional Responsibility

  • Mentor, train, and hold assistants accountable with care and directness

  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development days, school events, and community functions

  • Complete a minimum of one week of on-site preparatory work during Summer Session

  • Comply with all VDOE continuing education requirements and school policies

WHO YOU ARE

Required

  • AMI or AMS Montessori Certification in the 3–6 age range (AMI strongly preferred)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field

  • At least 1 year of Montessori classroom experience, including managing assistants

  • Strong communication skills with children, families, and colleagues; experience with diverse communities

The Mindset We Need

  • Growth-oriented, calm, and deeply committed to Montessori as a philosophy—not just a credential

  • A team player who understands that in a small school, every role is equally vital

  • Honest, direct, and open to feedback from administrators, families, and your own reflection

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

We offer a competitive package that goes beyond the paycheck:

  • Salary: $38,000–$46,000 based on certification and experience

  • 401(k) with Safe Harbor match: 100% of first 3%, 50% of next 2%

  • Paid Time Off: 10 days per school year, plus 28 paid program break days and 15 paid holidays annually

  • Professional development support and conference funding

  • 30% family tuition discount

  • Bereavement leave (3 days/year)

  • Potential annual performance bonus

  • Direct collaboration with administration and a voice in school-wide decisions

PRE-HIRE REQUIREMENTS

The following must be completed upon hire and prior to the start of the school year:

  • Current Tuberculosis (TB) test

  • Virginia Central Registry check, state background check, and fingerprinting (plus out-of-state checks if applicable)

  • First Aid / CPR Certification

  • Proof of Montessori certification or letter of current standing from the training center
