Executive Vice President and CFO

American Public Power Association
Alexandria, VA

Overview

The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) seeks candidates for the position of Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. The current EVP and CFO, who has served since Feb 2017, has announced that she will retire in April 2026. MOAA is a mission-driven organization dedicated to preserving and protecting earned benefits for our uniformed services, veterans, their families, and surviving spouses through advocacy, leadership, education, and service. The CFO role requires a hands-on financial leader who has managed complex budgets, overseen internal and external audits, stewarded large investment portfolios, and can clearly communicate financial strategy to executive teams, boards, and MOAA members.

The EVP/CFO will be a critical member of the executive leadership team and a strategic advisor to the CEO and Board of Directors. This individual operates under the general direction of the MOAA President and CEO and serves as an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors. Responsibilities include overseeing financial planning and analysis, ensuring compliance with nonprofit financial standards, managing risk, and guiding the organization’s long-term financial health and sustainability.

A candidate should have experience in a senior leadership position in one of the Uniformed Services, which provides a unique blend of operational discipline, leadership under pressure, and financial acumen to align with MOAA’s needs and values. Experience in both structured environments and dynamic financial ecosystems will be valuable as MOAA navigates growth, innovation, and continued service to its members.

Hybrid is a minimum of two days per week on-site. Position is expected to flex with more time on-site as needed.

  • Experience in a membership-based nonprofit organization, association, or mission-driven enterprise (senior military command; major command; major staff experience) highly desired

Military & Mission Alignment

  • Prior military service (officer or enlisted) with honorable discharge; senior leadership roles preferred
  • Deep understanding of military culture, values, and the needs of active duty, retired, and veteran communities

Technology & Systems Knowledge

  • Proficiency with financial systems (e.g., NetSuite or equivalent ERP systems)
  • Familiarity with CRM and association management systems (AMS), preferably those used in member-based nonprofits
  • Data-driven decision-maker comfortable using analytics and dashboards to drive operational excellence
