Physician - Psychiatrist (Fredericksburg)

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, including award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA-employed physicians who met the requirements at their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA Policy.
• Degree of doctor of medicine or equivalent from an approved school.
• Current unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the US or its territories.
• Residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification. Residency programs include those approved by ACGME, AOA, or other recognized programs with five years of verified practice in the US.
• Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA programs are eligible as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and may be appointed intermittently or on a fee basis.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Preferred experience working with Veterans.
• Ability to manage highly acute and complex situations/diagnoses.
• Physical requirements include mobility for sitting, walking, standing, and bending.

Duties

• Provide psychiatric evaluations and mental health treatment to a diverse veteran population, including geriatric and post-deployment combat veterans.
• Services can be delivered in-person, via telehealth, or by telephone.
• Conduct diagnostic assessments, medication management, psychotherapy, suicide risk assessments, crisis intervention, and respond to emergency situations.
• Order diagnostic tests, imaging, and consultations; interpret findings; and formulate treatment plans.
• Document in the electronic health record, coordinate referrals, and participate in peer review and team meetings.
• Engage in staff development, training, and educational presentations.
• Work schedule is Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
