E&i Technician
The E&I Technician performs maintenance, calibration, installation, fault diagnosis, and repair of electronic, electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic instruments and systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations. This role supports automated control systems and computer workstations, works with a wide range of field instruments, and maintains environmental and continuous emissions monitoring systems while adhering to strict environmental, health, and safety standards and supporting 24/7 plant operations.
Responsibilities- Perform and document maintenance, calibration, installation, fault diagnosis, and repair of electronic, electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic instruments and systems, including transmitters, switches, analyzers, control valves, relays, and related equipment to maintain safe and reliable operations.
- Carry out basic maintenance and troubleshooting on automated control systems, including PLC and DCS systems, as well as associated computer workstations, to support consistent production of on-time, quality products.
- Work with a wide variety of instruments such as pH meters, conductivity sensors, ultrasonic devices, guided wave radar, mass flow meters, pressure transducers, RTDs, nuclear level instruments, and other process measurement devices.
- Repair and maintain environmental and continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS) to ensure compliance and reliable operation.
- Use instrumentation and electrical test equipment to diagnose issues, verify proper operation, and perform corrective actions on field instruments and control systems.
- Install, calibrate, configure, program, modify, diagnose, and repair control valves, electronic, computerized, and electro-mechanical equipment as required.
- Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on distributed control systems (DCS), continuous emission monitoring systems (CEMS), and all associated instrumentation to maximize reliability and uptime.
- Work independently to complete technical tasks while collaborating with fellow technicians, contractors, operators, and vendors as needed to support plant operations and projects.
- Assist with quality improvement projects to facilitate continuous improvement in reliability, safety, and productivity.
- Perform all duties in a manner consistent with environmental, health, and safety policies and procedures.
- Provide daily support to plant operations to maintain continuous 24/7 production, including responding to instrumentation and electrical issues as they arise.
- Perform scheduled and non-scheduled preventative maintenance (PM) on instrumentation and control systems to minimize unplanned downtime.
- Communicate with planners and request or order non-stock parts to support maintenance and repair activities.
- Read and interpret manuals, schematics, and P&ID’s to troubleshoot, repair, and modify instrumentation and control systems accurately.
- Document and maintain equipment history to track reliability, support decision-making on repairs or replacement, and provide accurate maintenance records.
- Assist in maintaining site instrumentation and electrical technical documentation, ensuring equipment design information, technical drawings, loop sheets, specification sheets, and process changes remain current and accurate.
- Be willing and able to be trained and learn new technologies and applications to advance skills as an Instrument Technician and support evolving plant needs.
- Work overtime and provide off-hours call-out support when required to maintain plant reliability and continuous operations.
- Strong hands-on experience with instrumentation maintenance, calibration, installation, fault diagnosis, and repair across electronic, electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic systems.
- Proficiency in working with transmitters, switches, analyzers, control valves, relays, and similar industrial instrumentation.
- Ability to perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting on PLC and DCS automated control systems and associated computer workstations.
- Experience working with a wide range of instruments including pH, conductivity, ultrasonic, guided wave radar, mass flow, pressure transducers, RTDs, nuclear level instruments, and flowmeters.
- Knowledge and practical use of instrumentation and electrical test equipment for troubleshooting and verification of proper operation.
- Capability to install, calibrate, configure, program, modify, diagnose, and repair control valves and electro-mechanical equipment.
- Experience performing preventative and corrective maintenance on distributed control systems (DCS) and continuous emission monitoring systems (CEMS).
- Strong troubleshooting skills in automation and control systems, including PLC programming and HMI interaction.
- Ability to read and understand manuals, electrical and instrumentation schematics, and P&ID’s.
- Competence in documenting and maintaining equipment history and technical records to support reliability analysis and maintenance planning.
- Willingness to work overtime and provide off-hours call-out support when required.
- Willingness and ability to be trained and learn new technologies to continuously develop instrumentation and electrical skills.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills to work with technicians, contractors, operators, and vendors.
- Experience supporting large industrial plants or complex process facilities with multiple interconnected units.
- Background working with environmental and continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS).
- Familiarity with quality improvement initiatives and continuous improvement methodologies in a maintenance or operations environment.
- Ability to maintain and update site instrumentation and electrical technical documentation, including equipment design information, technical drawings, loop sheets, specification sheets, and process change records.
- Comfort working independently while coordinating activities with cross-functional teams.
- Adaptability to changing technologies and processes in industrial automation and instrumentation.
- Experience in a unionized industrial environment is beneficial but not required.

Work EnvironmentThe role is based at a very large industrial site that includes one massive plant composed of nine smaller interconnected plants that feed into each other, producing ammonia, ammonium sulfate, and caprolactam. The facility operates continuously and features a fully unionized environment, with union representation structured across a North Side and South Side. Work involves regular exposure to heavy industrial processes, complex instrumentation, and automated control systems, requiring adherence to strict safety procedures and use of appropriate personal protective equipment. Schedules vary by area: the North Side follows rotating shifts across days, evenings, and nights with defined off days, while the South Side operates on a daylight Monday through Friday schedule from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Technicians work in a hands-on environment around large-scale equipment, control rooms, and field instrumentation, supporting 24/7 operations in a dynamic, high-volume production setting.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $94744.00 - $94744.00/yr.
