Senior Mechanical Engineer / Project Manager

Midlothian, VA | Direct Hire | $90,000+ DOE

We are currently hiring on behalf of our client in Midlothian, VA for a Senior Mechanical Engineer / Project Manager . This is a direct hire opportunity offering a competitive salary of $90,000 per year (DOE) and the chance to lead major industrial design projects from concept to completion within a collaborative engineering team.

Position Overview

The Senior Mechanical Engineer / Project Manager will oversee the full project lifecycle—from client coordination and scope development to design execution and final delivery. This position requires a strong background in mechanical engineering design, project management, and industrial systems, along with proven leadership and mentoring abilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary client interface , ensuring clear communication and project alignment.
• Develop and manage study reports, bids, proposals, scopes of work, P&IDs, cost estimates, schedules, and material lists .
• Lead and oversee the engineering and design process from inception to completion, including directing designers and engineers, conducting design reviews, and verifying deliverables (calculations, drawings, and reports).
• Manage project scope, schedule, and budget to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery.
• Apply cost-effective, innovative design solutions to improve constructability and reduce overall project cost.
• Size and specify process equipment such as pumps, tanks, reactors, heat exchangers, chillers, condensers, and mixers.
• Perform engineering calculations to size piping systems, utility systems, and safety relief devices.
• Review and validate equipment submittals for compliance with specifications and design intent.
• Maintain a strong working knowledge of industrial codes and standards (ASME, API, etc.).
• Conduct field visits for data collection, verification, and commissioning support.
• Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and design staff.

Qualifications & Experience

Required:

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
• 10+ years of experience in heavy industrial design or project engineering.
• Proven project management experience within industrial or manufacturing environments.
• In-depth understanding of process piping, material handling, conveying systems, HVAC , and mechanical system design.
• Strong grasp of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and heat/mass transfer principles.
• Familiarity with safety relief device design , sizing, and applicable code requirements.
• Demonstrated experience with process safety practices (e.g., PHAs, HAZOPs, risk assessments).
• Experience working in a multidiscipline engineering consulting firm .
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and standard engineering tools.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills .
• Proven ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining quality and efficiency.

Preferred:

• Virginia Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or ability to obtain one.
• Experience assisting in commissioning and start-up activities.
• Working knowledge of constructability, maintainability, and operational design principles .
• Strong commitment to mentoring and developing junior engineering talent.
