As a Data Scientist at Capital One, you’ll be part of a team that’s leading disruption at a new scale, using the latest in computing and machine learning technologies and operating across billions of customer records to unlock opportunities that help everyday people save money, time and effort in their financial lives.

The External Data Strategy team builds the data pipelines, analytics, and models that enable Capital One to understand our customers’ financial lives. We lead the full data lifecycle from sourcing new data, designing and implementing feature pipelines, to providing support to data users across the business. We leverage Python, Spark, SQL, Databricks, and other AWS capabilities to deliver powerful data for our customers.

Responsibilities

• Partner with a cross-functional team of data scientists, software engineers, and product managers to deliver data and insights that drive the business
• Leverage a broad stack of technologies — Python, Conda, AWS, Databricks, Spark, and more — to reveal the insights hidden within large data volumes
• Build machine learning models and data pipelines through all phases of development, from design through training, evaluation, validation, and implementation
• Develop deep subject matter expertise in consumer financial data and how that data enables Capital One to make the right decisions for customers
• Lead a team of 10-15 data scientists as a leader-of-leaders by setting strategic direction, providing technical oversight and guidance, and developing talented individual contributors and managers
• Translate complex work into tangible business goals through strong interpersonal communication

• A data guru. You can retrieve, combine, and analyze data from various sources and structures; understanding the data is key to great data science

Basic Qualifications:

• Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, one of the following with an expectation that the required degree will be obtained on or before the scheduled start date:
  • A Bachelor's Degree in a quantitative field (Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field) plus 9 years of experience performing data analytics
  • A Master's Degree in a quantitative field (Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field) or an MBA with a quantitative concentration plus 7 years of experience performing data analytics
  • A PhD in a quantitative field (Statistics, Economics, Operations Research, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field) plus 4 years of experience performing data analytics
• At least 4 years of experience leveraging open source programming languages for large-scale data analysis
• At least 4 years of experience working with machine learning
• At least 4 years of experience utilizing relational databases

Preferred Qualifications:

• At least 3 years of experience working with AWS
• At least 3 years of experience managing people
• At least 5 years of experience in Python for large-scale data analysis
• At least 5 years of experience with machine learning
• At least 5 years of experience with Spark

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. This salary information is for candidates hired to work in one of these locations and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based on hours worked.

McLean, VA: $269,100 - $307,200 for Dir, Data Science

New York, NY: $293,600 - $335,100 for Dir, Data Science

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range for that location, and the actual salary offered will be reflected in the offer letter.

This role is eligible to earn performance-based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonuses and/or long-term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non-discretionary depending on the plan.
